Arp65 Tl Posts: 3 Sweden | Posted - 11/29/2003 7:01:18 PM Does anyone know where to find newest driver for an external Safeway modem? It's Safeway, SW-56AE-S, 56 Kbps V.90, model# 118127. It is a Ambient (now Intel) chipset, I do not know if MD5650 or MD5660. It is supoosed to be able to upgrade to V.92. I want to find the newest driver for Windows XP. On the web site, address printed on the box, www.safeway.to I can find a driver archive for my modem that says 118127_winxp.zip, only thing is that the .inf file included is version 3.0.0. and I have 3.0.5 (dated 2001-05-30)! Included with the modem was a CD with some programs and drivers, put together by Computer Associates, and the included driver for winxp is version 3.0.5, then it is amazing to find that nowhere on the web is there any newer driver than 3.0.0 or 3.0.2! I would like to have a signed driver for XP, and I do understand that normally Win2000 drivers will work under WinXP, but it seems no way to find any. On driverguide.com there is an archive for MD5660 with driver and firmware software and upgrade file. Even though I not used the firmware, I found that the included driver (supposed to use after upgrade) is ver. 3.0.2. Am I the only person in world having version 3.0.5? I know that the company seems to have changed name from Safeway to Sweex, but that does not help. Their site has version 3.0.0 dated 2000-02-25. Regards, |

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 11/30/2003 5:37:57 AM Is this modem USB or Serial? Note that Intel acquired Ambient Technologies which was a spin-off of Cirrus Logic created to handle just the modem portion of Cirrus/Amibent's business The MD565x is a hardware-controller modem that supports x2 and V.90. This chipset has been discontinued. Flash firmware upgrades are available from some of the vendors that made modems based upon this chipset: Actiontec, Archtek, GVC, Pine, MaxTech, Trust and WebExcel. Intel has a generic driver - but the driver does not upgrade firmware.
Might try AT+MS? and ATI1 in hyperterminal to see if this modem supports V92.

Arp65 Tl Posts: 3 Sweden | Posted - 11/30/2003 4:57:19 PM Charles, Thanks for your prompt answer! Yepp, I know about the history part (Cirrus etc.). Before I posted here I also read the page about Cirrus - Ambient - Intel, on the Modemsite, I have been at the Intel site, Safeway, Sweex, Driverguide.com and many others. This is a 14 months old serial modem connected to a 14 months old PC running Windows XP Home. We all make our decisions when buying something, in this case I maybe should have bought a more well known modem. The reason for buying a serial to a new PC was to be able to use the modem with my second, 10 year old, PC as back up. OK, so what is my main problem, if there is one, I have had problems with being disconnected from ISP the last 7 months, and in my efforts of trying everything to solve this I am also looking for a new driver. Now I have been at Windows Update Catalog and downloaded the driver I suppose that you mention. The classGUID is same as my present inf, this one only mention two product types but my Serial AMB3100 is there. It is funny to find the driver at MS; normally you would not look at their site for drivers since they normally are out of date, and sometime generic drivers. It is so many years ago since I used Hyperterminal (or sim.) so I do not remember how to set it up and send the AT commands to the modem. But I think we can get some information from the Device manager in Windows. Under Properties for my modem, on the diagnose tab it says: SERENUM\AMB3100. And if I check the modem I get this result (cut out): So I guess my modem is upgradeable, if there only was any firmware and driver (in those drivers I have seen so far there is nothing mentioned about the V.44 protocol, but then again I do not know so much about modems etc.). And of course, my ISP must support V.92. I have seen one firmware for Intel MD5660, but that one was for some modem called Trust, I do not want to use any firmware not designed for my modem. I certainly will take a look at the driver you mentioned, thanks. Regards, |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 11/30/2003 5:49:00 PM There has been a problem with this modem for some time. I think what happen was a non XP and non v92 modem force with flash and inf file to work. Please post a modem log.If you are having trouble holding a V90 connection might try this string in extra setting. Also if you have a nic card installed and not using it disable it in device manager. +MS=V34,1,0,33600 Note P. Mem. : 008 Bit 001 W.S. D. Mem : 008 Bit 001 W.S Be sure not to use 16 bit flash.

Arp65 Tl Posts: 3 Sweden | Posted - 11/30/2003 8:02:45 PM Thanks for replies. The driver seems to work, however time will tell if my disconnect problem will go away. I am not sure I understand what you mean: Yes, I have a PCI Fast Ethernet adapter, but as I do not use it (and in troubleshooting rebooting problems) I have diabled it. For the moment there are no extra string. I have tried changing from 115200 to 57600 bps in Modem Configuration for my connection to ISP, also removing the three checkmarks for hardware flow control etc. in Configuration. (Sorry if the descriptions I give not correspond so well with English Windows, I have non-english version of XP.) I have also checked with my ISP for the signal level on telephone line, and with their brief check they could not find anything odd. I have also checked if they use some sort of ping (to check if I am still con.) that my firewall stops, and thus gets me disconnected, but they do not use that. I do not have any service like "call waiting" that could interfere with my connection. I do not understand: I do not get disc. always, or after a given time period, it is intermittent. So in the first place I would not like to limit the speed/connection rate. As to HyperTerminal; I have no problem locating it, and I certainly stay of the net when trying Regards, |
