| smartyrc Tl Posts: 3 | Posted - 7/19/2000 5:23:37 PM    I have a 56K 3Com/USR internal Voice WinModem, and all this time I was able to get connected to the internet using free ISPs. I tried to install a network card somedays back and since then I am unable to connect to the net, although my modem shows that I am connected, no data transfer takes place. I even removed the network card/drivers and tried reinstalling the modem/drivers but still get the same result. I tried connecting to MSN but that too doesn't work. With free ISPs like Altavista/FreeDSL/Bluelight the bytes received in the "Connection window"(the one that sits in the SysTray) never exceed 544 bits whereas with MSN it does increase above 2Kbytes. | smartyrc Tl Posts: 3 | Posted - 7/20/2000 8:55:05 AM Actually, I tried creating new one and even adding some extra settings like s32=98 to disable x2 and v.90 yesterday. This allowed to receive bytes even uptill 12K but whenever I opened IE it failed. I installed Net.Medic yesterday and it is showing some IP errors but what exactly is not given, My modem is set to COM2(If I change it to COM1 it does not work) I have DialUp Adapter, Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP entries in my network settings. Since it can dial out or even send/receive faxes, I don't think anything is wrong with the modem. So what is wrong? I have spent almost 10 days on this. SmartyRC |

| v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 7/21/2000 5:47:59 PM You need to understand the dial-up networking and a network card share parts of the same Windows networking services. The various components are bound together: protocols; adapters (the modem becomes an 'adapter' through dial-up networking; a network card is also an adapter); and services or clients. After you added the network adapter, the settings in networking probably got changed in a manner that causes your trouble. A DUNS connection requires the Dialup adapter be bound to the TCP/IP protocol; the DUNs connectoid must be set to use only TCP/IP, and you may need DNS IP addresses in TCP/IP settings; For Windows networking, the network card needs to be bound to NetBeui/NetBios, and does not normally need to be bound to TCP/IP. Removing all networking components - physically and via ControlPanel->Network; then re-install DUNs should solve your problem. Aloha, |

The main reason I installed the network card was for DSL. But the that is also not yet up and running so all is mess at present. What could be the reason for IP errors? Because I am able to connect to the server but bytes can not be received even though connection is active. I tried to do ping also but that too fails. What are the main driver files needed for DUN? Which I can physically remove and then reinstall from the Windows98 setup explicitely? Rohit SmartyRC |
