I have a brand new PCtel chipset HSP56 MicroModem (cheapie) employing the driver dated THIS year from their included CD. I'm running Windows ME. If I set my system to go on STANDBY, whenever it returns, the modem is no longer working, ie. "Port is already open" message results when clicking on "More Info" button under Modem Control panel Diagnostics tab; and dial-up fails, claiming modem is not responding. It's OK again after reboot. I hate this problem. I WAS using a more expensive 3Com modem, but it sometimes messed up my home's phone lines when the computer went into Standby mode. I MUCH prefer to employ Standby instead of Hibernate. Arghh!

I even found a slightly newer driver (7/2003), a generic HSP "Unidriver" at conexant.com. I got rid of my previous driver, installed the unidriver; the modem still works fine, but the standby problem hasn't been remedied. I term this syndrome, "Port Disassociation Upon Return from Standby". Does anyone have any knowledge about it?? I strongly suspect it's exclusively a software thing.

Perhaps it's NOT a software issue after all; perhaps it's actually a hardware deficiency. I checked some info displayed by SiSoftware's SANDRA (a system analysis tool); and under Power Mgmt. category for my modem it lists "No" for "Supports D1 & D2 PM States".
