Rounds2go Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 12/17/2003 11:02:41 AM I recently bought a new computer with an 80 GB HDD and 512 Meg memory which was much larger capacity than my older one which was only 1 yr old. The modem that came with it was a 56K and I could only get about 48K speed from it. My older computer had a 56K modem and I was getting 52K most of the time. They replaced the modem with a 45K flex and it is only giving me about 48K. I have proved that the problem is not with my ISP because I was getting 52K consistantly. Has anyone have a clue as what might be the problem and how can it be corrected? Thanks "MOE" Turn a round for fun |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 12/17/2003 11:46:58 AM What modem and OS are you using now. |
Rounds2go Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 12/18/2003 6:22:36 AM At present I am using Win ME but will change to Win XP as soon as I get my upgrade. I plan to reformat the HDD and start from scatch. There was also a problem with partitioning the 80Gig drive that I need to correct at the same time. As for the brand of the modem, it li labeled "Phanta Link" PCI internal Modem V.92/56Kbps, Mod NO:A-1789C1 and was made in China. The softeware by PCTEL. As for the label and the card it's self, I would have to pull the cover to see as I didn't record the info when I installed it. It is suppposed to have the following features: Data Mode, Fax mode, Voice function, Speaker phone and answering machine. It is a replacement modem from Micro Magic who is the people who I bought the compputer from off of eBay and had it configured to spec. Thanks for the reply "MOE" Turn a round for fun |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 12/18/2003 9:44:10 AM http://shop.store.yahoo.com/saveateaglestore/pctel56kv92p.html This modem uses the PCTel PCT789T-C1 softmodem chipset and pctel was taken over by conexant. Is there a FCCID number on the modem. Most of these modem vendor just repackage these modems and put there name on them.Note the model number is the chipset. http://conexant.com/support/pctel_driverdownload.jsp http://conexant.com/support/pctel_faqs.html Connection speed can change from modem to modem. This is because of hardware and software of the modem and the isp server. Check the drivers version that you have installed. Edited by - charles on 12/18/2003 10:01:05 AM |
Rounds2go Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 12/20/2003 5:01:11 AM I checked the modem board and found no FCC number. The driver listed in properties is: comm.drv. I didn't find anything on the manufactures sight that would clue me to the correct driver. Maybe I just didn't get to the right page. I now have my copy of Win XP and plan to do a total format before installing it. I have a feeling that I will never get the speed that I was getting with my other computer. Thanks for the tips that you gave, I learned something from them. "MOE" Turn a round for fun |
