My Intel Connect phone, fax software wont work because the system no longer recognizes the virtual com8 port. Using w98se, LT winmodem driver v8.3 on HP Pavilin 8370. Uninstalling and then reinstalling Intel Connect didn't help. Would like to get com8 back without doing a complete system reinstall including w98se upgrade. Would appreciate any help.

Check what port the modem is on and then see if you can set this in the fax software setup.

If the modem is assigned to COM8, it's usually the result of repeated/failed install attempts.

Windows may list COM ports in use that really aren't (most computers come with 1 - assigned COM1).
You should be able to recover the lower com port #s and assign the modem to COM2 3 or 4...

TO FORCE THE [PCI] MODEM TO A SPECIFIC COM PORT**:
Edit the Ltmodem.inf file to uncomment (remove the semicolon - ; ) from the line:
[ltmodem_CommVars_AddReg]
HKR,, PORTNAME,,"COM2"

If you do this do it before the drivers install.
