I have been experiencing strange problems with my DUN (dial up networking) internet connection for months know. And I am finaly fed up with it and would like some help.

Problem: I will loost my internet connection (meaning no progams can find a connection and act as if I'm not online) however according to the task tray icon I am still online. And when I pick up the phone I hear that awfull sound which tells me I'm online. I can disconnect and re-connect my dial up connection and still my computer can't detect my connection. The only thing to do is to restart the computer than it works fine again. The problem will randomley popup again later.

The strange part: I can leave my DUN connection on for days or even weeks at a time without loosing a connection (or having the computer not be able to detect it). However when I leave it on for days I am usually running P2P of some sort like Overnet. It will go days or if it disconnects it will emeditley re-connect. With no problems.

However: When I experience these problems with losing my connection without actually being kicked of line it is always when I am actually on the computer. Running Internet Explorer or Opera checking e-mail browsing net ect . . . I thought it was maybe because there is idle time when I don't have P2P running constantley uploading/downloading. So I turned on "Symantec Norton Connection Keep Alive" which pings Symantec's site every minut. And still the same problem. It is completley random and ALWAYS happens when I am on the computer, and I am ALWAYS connected 24/7.

Possable cause? I do sometimes run a second dial up connection and use MultiRas to rotate my current ip back and forth for increased download speeds over P2P. However this is automated to pickup the second line late at night and drop it early in the morning so my phone is open. If I check my l statistics page on Overnet (which tells me the transfer rate history) I see that my connection has remained active. It ONLY happens when I am there and I don't seem to be experiencing these connection problems during the night. So I don't know if that helps or not. But it's the only eunique thing my connection does that I can thing of that may be the culprit.

Any Ideas?

When this occurs, check to see if you can ping/traceroute to your ISP (gateway- first hop in any other trace)
www.modemsite.com/56k/backbone.asp

Does your PC have a network card?
www.modemsite.com/56k/nic.asp

What kind of modem(s) and what do post-call diagnostics show?

You may have an application set to auto-connect using a different DUNs connection than the one used to establish the connection?

Aloha! Richard.

ok I will try the ping test the next time this problem reacures. my modem is "Generic Softk56," I don't know where to get the call diagnostics info from.
about the same connection on different dun connection I have 2 conections that I run togather at night usually. 2 isp (connected via dun) 2 modems, 2 phone lines, running multiras to rotate my current ip every 30 seconds to give me more bandwith for downloading on p2p. however when this suspended connection problem accoures I am just connected on one line. so I don't think that's the problem but it's worth noting.
also I was refured to this forum via another forum and there is a tone of more info on my problem here:

we've been working on this a while with no luck, so if you can check it out it may be helpfull.
thanks

I scanned the other thread and saw something like -
when your connection is 'lost' you start P2P program and it works? (Your connection works for a peer-to-peer program, but you can't browse?)

In addition to previous suggestion, try browsing to an IP address - IOW, put something like:
64.78.60.79
for the URL (address bar), or
http://64.78.60.79

What version of Windows are you running?

If you get page using IP address, problem is with DNS.
Windows NT/2k/XP - from command prompt:
ipconfig /? (shows all options)
ipconfig /displaydns (shows dns cache)
ipconfig /flushdns (flushes cache)
etc.

from command prompt:
nslookup
returns >
you can enter url and program will do lookup on default nameserver and return ip address.

Aloha! Richard.

yes you read correctley about my p2p progam being able to connect download and upload while my browser us unable to find a connection, that's the strange part I am really still online. My browser just can't find my connection, disconnect, re-connect dialing different phone lines different ip's different modems nothing helps but to restart computer. then the problem will sneek up on me again. on average once every 2 to 3 days.
I have XP Pro, I wrote down all your commands and tested them to make shore I know how to work them and will try them next time this problem reaccures, thanks

it happened again, I tried the ping command and it worked fine. I then tried entering a ip into the browser with no success.
also I am going to log the date and time of everytime this happens to see if there is a pattern.
