Please can anyone help? I have just bought a brand new computer in the UK and I am having problems with the 56k modem (sorry but I don't know what it is). I know that there is no problem with the phone line as I can log on fine with my old computer, and I can log on fine with the new one, but after about a minute it kicks me off-line. It doesn't matter what ISP I use (I have tried 3) and it doesn't matter whether I am trying to go on the internet, or download emails etc but it just kicks me off. I can then redial and get logged on again, but that doesn't help as I can't get any downloads, or emails or really do anything on-line! The computer company I bought it from (Multivision) are rubbish (so I have found) and can't think of an answer. Please can you???
Thanks
charles

Windows XP? - whatever version, you can get basic info & post-call diagnostics from the modem and Windows (which will also serve to identify what kind of modem you have):
www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/diag.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

Shot in the somewhat dark:
Does computer have a network card?
www.modemsite.com/56k/nic.asp

Or, you may have more than 1 'connectoid' and you may have browser, e-mail or something set to automatically connect using 'the wrong' connectoid.
Create new connectoid for your ISP and delete all others.
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for the replies. Can't log on long enough to do the diagnostics but the company I bought it from are taking it back to try and fix so hopefully it is all sorted!

I had that problem, and found that I had the blaster worm on my computer. If it gives an error message and then shuts down after 60 secs, then this is one of the symptoms. Log on to www.microsoft.com on another computer and print off the page they have added to remove this worm.

I have a Lucent Win Modem with similar problem that solves itself when XP OS is Restored, see Algere Public forum.
