our company has about 50 remote users that have WYSE terminals connecting to our Unix box. at each end of the connection we use various USR modems (mainly 33.6 and 56k v.90 sportsters) since these modems are no longer available from USR we have started to switch to the USR5686E 56k v.92. The first batch we had worked no problem, but the latest ones will not connect to each other (the handshake drops midway through) and will also not connect to the older models (handshake goes through but no login prompt on the WYSE) i have tried 6 different modems on 3 different phone lines and can't get them to connect, switching in our 1 remaining older model and it works fine.

USR rep suggested using the string "ats32=99&w" and setting dip switch 7 to dwn but that didn't work. the switch settings for all models are the following (from 1-8) UP,DWN,UP,DWN,UP,UP,DWN,DWN

sorry for the long post, just frustrated trying to get these things to work since I have new users waiting to get on.

www.modemsite.com/56k/ms.asp

Since V.34 is the highest 2 client modems can connect with, disabling 56k should help -
Disable V.92
s32=130 +PCW=2 +PIG=1 +PQC=3

Disable V.90/x2 - s32=98

To disable both V.92 and V.90/x2, you add the s32 values -
130 + 98 = 228
s32=228
the other + commands disable quick connect, PCM upstream, and modem on hold.

Aloha! Richard.

thanks, i was trying some of that using USR's 'control centre' and it kept hanging. a different tech at USR just sent me a patch with an older firmware version and after i flashed the modem it worked fine.

thanks for your help, i've learned more about modems today than i ever wanted to know. :)

have a happy new year!
