The highest performance modems have a "Controller" on-board to process commands and to handle error correction and data compression. Modems without a Controller (sometimes called Win, or Windows modems) shift all this processing to your PC's processor. This reduces computer performance, especially for on-line gaming and multimedia applications. Flash Memory is one sure sign that a modem has a Controller. On-board DSP? Is the transformer an identifier of some sort for these? |

Maybe was accurate 6 or 10 years ago, but not accurate today. www.modemsite.com/56k/buy.asp Most computer systems that come with modems, and most modem sellers do not disclose the chipset. If you know the chipset, you know what kind of modem it is. Aloha! Richard. |
