They are old enough that the product code field is blank when you run the Modem Identification Wizard. The 3/19/98 code referenced in your first link works, but it doesn't upgrade to X2 or V.90 if the modem isn't already X2 or V.90 enabled. There is a modem upgrade wizard that wants to dial a BBS number that is now a general USR voice mail number or read a diskette purchased from USR with a DMF file. Current USR support can't do anything more than send me to the FTP site for the stuff I have already.

Issuing the ATI7 command produces the following information to appear
on your terminal screen
ati7
3Com Courier V.Everything Configuration Profile...
Product type US/Canada External
Product ID XX345300
Options HST,V32bis,Terbo,VFC,V34+,x2,V90

DSP date 12/14/99
Supervisor rev 9.9.9
DSP rev 9.9.9
DAA rev 0012
Serial Number 000000000001
OK
Check the Supervisor and Digital Signal Processor (DSP) dates found in
the last two lines of the screen display. These dates will determine which
version of the software your modem is using.

QUERYING AND HELP SCREENS
Perform a test of the modem’s random-access
memory (RAM) and display either OK (0) or ERROR
(4), followed by OK when the test is completed.
You may want to use this command if the Courier
V.Everything modem appears to be malfunctioning.
ATI2
Display the Courier V.Everything modem’s banner,
or product title.
ATI3
Display the Courier V.Everything modem’s current
configuration.
ATI4
Display the configuration saved in nonvolatile
random access memory (NVRAM). If your Courier
V.Everything mode connects to a device that has
Dial Security and local access enabled, you cannot
view the stored phone numbers.
ATI5
Display a diagnostic summary. During a
connection, the Courier V.Everything mode
monitors and stores information about link
operations. When the call is ended, you can
request a diagnostic summary.
The duration of the last call or the real time is
displayed, depending on the modem clock setting.
For calls under data compression, the number of
characters sent may be less than the number of
octets sent, due to data compression operations.
ATI6
Display the product configuration. ATI7
Lists phone numbers with redial instructions. ATI8
Displays modem’s Plug and Play ID. ATI9
Display the Dial Security Account Status. For
security administrators only, unless local security is
disabled (S53=0 or S53.2=0)
ATI10
Display a connection report that 3Com Technical
Support representatives use to help you solve
problems.
ATI11
Display caller ID information from the current call
(if in progress) or the last call (if between calls).
The caller ID information remains until either the
modem is reset or until the modem receives
another valid caller ID signal.
ATI15
Display a connection report that 3Com Technical
Support representatives use to help you solve
problems.

Not always--

USRobotics Courier V.Everything Configuration Profile...

As far as CRINF.ZIP goes, it tells how to install new Windows INF files, but it doesn't help in enabling X2/V.90.

I have seen somewere on the usr site if you use the drivers on the ftp site it will take it back to V34.
Note: Updates in the FTP site above include 33.6 and V.90 code only. This FTP site does not include V.90 upgrades for 33.6 products. If you have previously upgraded your 33.6 to V.90, do not run the update from this site. Running the update will return your modem to 33.6 code.

I did get an answer from USR Customer Support. Upgrading still costs $60, and the part number is CRRV90. Call the number in the email copied below and pick the parts/accessories line. It'll take about a half hour to enable the key so you can call in and upgrade one modem.

Re: Email ID 3090754

Dear John,

Thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics.

This upgrade process only applies to:

1224-14
1224-04
1223-14
1223-04

If your modem has been already flashed to X2 proceed to step one. To check for X2 type ATI7 in a terminal program and look at the OPTIONS line.

If your modem has not been upgraded to X2 look at the CLOCK FREQ line to determine what clock frequency you have.

For 20 MHz clock frequency the firmware that supports the V90 upgrade can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl05/usrsdl.exe

For 25 MHz clock frequency the firmware that supports the V90 upgrade can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl05/usrsdl25.exe

Download the proper firmware from the U.S. Robotics FTP server and run the flash upgrade program. Your modem will then be ready to be upgraded to V.90

After flash upgrading your modems with x2/v90 firmware, open any terminal program such as HYPERTERMINAL in Windows or QModemPro.

You will need to purchase an upgrade key to update the modem. To obtain an UPGRADE KEY CODE from US Robotics for $60 by calling 888-326-6099 8am-4pm MST M-F.

At that point, From your terminal program:

Type AT then press the ENTER key.
Look for an OK response.
Type ATS30=1 then press the ENTER key.
Look for an OK response.
Type atdt18478742660 or 18478742661 then press the ENTER key.
Once a connection is established, you will be prompted to enter your enable key.

At this point, put in your Upgrade Key. REMEMBER: THE KEY CODE, IS CASE SENSITIVE.

Follow the on-screen prompts.
The modem will disconnect automatically after the upgrade is successful. This process from dial to disconnect is approximately 1 minute.
Reset your modem by turning it off, waiting 2 seconds, then powering on.
Type ATI7 in the terminal program, then press the ENTER key.
In the Options line you should see x2 or v90.
At that point, You have successfully upgraded your modem.

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to assist you. Should you require further assistance with your U.S. Robotics product, please feel free to contact us again.

Again, thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics.

These modems are good modems but not worth the 60 to update.See if I can find another way.

I agree, Charles. I too will look for another method. I've sent an email to the Russian fellow who wrote a
Sportster upgrade utility. His website indicated that there was a free method to upgrade Couriers using some European utility called UCU (Universal Courier Updater?). I managed to find a copy to download, but all the websites I've found that discuss how to use it are in Russian, and Babelfish can't quite handle it.

Not sure yet about this UCU program about updating the modem or just fix a bad flash.
http://www.people.nnov.ru/belyanin/3COM%20U_S_Robotics%20Sportster%2033600%20&%2056K%20FAQ.htm
How can I restore the modem in case of unsuccessful reprogramming of FLASH memory?

The best way to restore the modem is to carry it to the warranty service. But you can use the utility UCU.EXE (ftp://ftp.usrsupport.ru
Addy had change had to find it.

I've come up with a solution. On this site, http://pq.ozersk.ru/ftp/fechos/not_os/hardware/modems/usr/,
there are two files, idsdl304.rar and id25_304.rar, for 20Mhz and 25Mhz Couriers respectively. I had to find a utility to unpack the RAR format archive. I downloaded an evaulation copy of WINRAR from http://www.rarlab.com. Unpacking that stuff gives you modified DOS SDL.EXE utilities that flashes the old Courier V.Everything's to x2, V.90, and the latest 03/19/98 firmware. I can connect at 48k V.90 to either USR Total Control or a Livingston Portmaster 3. An example of the before and after ATI7 is below.
