I need help. I am able to reformat my harddrive without a problem, but when it comes to installing the drivers I'm stumbling around in the dark. The times that I have needed to reformat I've had to take the system in to the shop after having done the reformat to have the drivers installed, and walk away having paid an $80 plus bill! Something that I can ill afford since I am on a disability pension. When ever I ask anyone for a little assistance, my response is always the same: "you don't want to or need to know how to install the drivers--it's too difficult." So I've taken it on blindly myself. I have just reformatted my system and have installed all necessary drivers without a problem, I am using a 98 OS .But now, I've run into a snag with the modem driver. Hope you can help. It seems I'm unable to install the driver for my modem correctly. I wrote everything down. I went through the steps of adding the modem driver through the Add New Hardware, but once installed none of the settings match. It is using Com 1 when according to my notes it was using Com 3. and according to my notes my modem was written as a HCF Modem, Rockwell PCI Modem Enumerator. It now says that it is a Rockwell HCF 56k Speakerphone PCI modem, are these one & the same? I also noted that when it was installed before the reformat, it appeared in the Add/Remove list, this is not the case this time. My disk appears to contain more then one modem driver and I may have installed the wrong one. How do I know which one to install and how? When I check have disk, do I have to type in D:\ and model number? These are the ones listed in the disk manual, how do I know which one is the correct one?

When I checked to see if the modem is working correctly, I get a box that says it cannot read Port Name from registry.

Hope someoen can help, desperate and frustrated here indeed.
With sincere thanks, Kathleen

You can not use the add new hardware wizard to install the modem. You need to remove all modem drivers that are installed, remove the modem from the device manager, reboot and windows should find new hardware.

The only way to find out what modem it is is to look on the modem for the fccid number. Is this a name brand pc? We know for sure it is a Zoltrix modem and a HCF modem just not the model number.Do you know what driver version that was installed.

This page will help but need to know what modem you have, check modem board for any number like the fccid number or a tag on back of the modem.

model FM-VSP56i3 uses the Rockwell ACF 56K chip not this one.
Model FM-HSP56PCI uses the PCtel 1789 56,000bps chip, not this one.
Zoltrex 33,600 Win HSP uses th epctel chipset, not this one.
FMSFT56i uses the Conexant HSF 56K chipset, not this one.
model FM-HCF56i use the Conexant hcf chip. has to be this one.

Ok the best way for you to install this modem would be to download this driver and unzip to a floppy. This is a newer driver than the one on the cd.
http://www.zoltrix.multinet.pl/modem/fmhcf56i-drivers.htm#95/98

Remove old modem drivers,go to the device manager and remove the modem, reboot and when windows finds new hardware just point to the floppy. You will only have one driver here for the modem.Note there is a readme file with this driver on install
