My computer came preinstalled with a 3com modem and its a 56k one. I have had it for awhile and I have recieved 53.3 sometimes. I connect through AOL, Netzero, and Altavista Free Access. They all have 56k servers. Recently I upgraded my platform to win98 and win98 gave me a driver for my modem. Since then I have only connected at 31.2 and I checked my info in diagnostics and it says something about winmodem 33.6. Then later on somewhere it says that I last connected at 31.2/33.6. I think the computer is identifing it as a 33.6 modem. I have tried to get a new driver from 3com. But I cant seem to find my model number. It doesnt say on the modem itself(internal) because for some reason its on the same card as my sound card also. There are no serial codes/bar codes to check it out. I downloaded some internet update wizard from them and it said that I should check with my provider of the modem. I tried to check out what model it might be on packard bell's website, but there site for some reason doesnt work! Nothing on it works! Is there some kind of driver that I can get that is like universal? Ill deal with anything that is higher than 31.2! Please help me, anyone!

My recommendation would be to contact the puter mfg to get the install disk (if you dont have it)for the modem. They must have a download driver section on their site somewhere.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that I tried to call Packard Bell and they only talk to you if you still have a warranty. I tried there website packardbell.com and it doesnt work. 3com told me to contact them since its preinstalled. Thanks anyway, I think hopefully I am going to get Cable and get rid of these slow turtle crap! Thanks

All 3Com modems (including OEM) will identify themselves with ati7 using Hyperterminal or Modemchk or WinCPanel->Modems. See Link

It sounds as though your modem is NOT installed properly;
If you had 56k capability in Win95, and you installed Win98 without reformatting your hard drive, the necessary driver is probably still on your system; It sounds as though your modem is a Winmodem as well, and there are specific known issues with Win98 upgrades and the USR Winmodem - Microsoft has a KB article.
Also see MS KB - Link
