Have a Dell running XP. It came with a Dell preinstalled modem, and I have no idea what chipset or who really makes it. It always worked flawlessly, and the speed I was able to achieve was outstanding for 56K. Here's the problem: had a lightning storm and modem stopped working, no amount of help worked - guessing it got fried. Went out and bought a Zoom V92. Everything installed fine but now we are lucky to connect consistently with our ISP, and speeds are horrible, sometimes have to wait several minutes for one simple web page, where previously it would take 5 or 10 seconds. Tried another ISP, and although connection and speed was moderately better, still saw same general behavior. Troubleshooting with both Dell and my ISP results in lots of fingerpointing, but general feeling that it's either phone line or modem. Seeing as how I previously had flawless performance across same phone line, I'm guessing it's the modem. Are any modems better than others at filtering noise? Is Zoom generally not good? Are the ones offered at this site good? Just seems like my Zoom gets lost in space frequently....any thoughts?

What model zoom do you have. Might disconnect everything from there phone jacks and try connection again. Might also try other phone jack. Do you hear any noise on the phone line, cross talk? Would like to see a modem log. Some modem do handle line noise better than other but most of the time it is that the modem tries to connect at the highest connect rate.Sometimes this rate is to high for the line to handle so you get the page freeze.Might slow the modem connection down some to help this problem. Did you uninstall the other modem before you remove it.Like remove the drivers first than the modem?

Disconnect everything from all phone jacks in the house, or just make sure that the modem is the only thing connected to this one jack (it is)? Have never heard any noise or crosstalk during voice conversations on any of our phones. How do I get a modem log? I did uninstall other modem completely including drivers (at least, I think I did, how do i verify?). I'll need to check on exact model...at work now....
