malcolm Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 1/27/2004 8:11:33 PM I've tried several v.92 modems, and they all give slower connect speeds than my old DSI/Creative 3635 pci v.90. I tried a USR 5610B, Zoom 3049 ext, and now an Actiontec PCI V9219 (agere 1648c chip). Actiontec says the driver I have is up to date. None of the v.92 modems will ever get above 34,600. Connections are usually from 28 to 34.6. I've tried calls to lots of ISPs - same results. Any suggestions? Is there a reason that most v.92 modems would connect slower on the same lines that my old v.90 gets pretty good speeds? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 1/28/2004 12:18:29 PM It might be the DSI/Creative speeds aren't really the speed the modem stays at - I would suggest checking your throughput with the 3635 - www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-thru.asp Do you still have the other modems? Aloha! Richard. |
malcolm Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 2/5/2004 9:18:20 AM Richard, I did look at the Actiontec ati11 command, but not the other two modems, which I no longer have. The actiontec showed no unusual info - no retrains, initial and final receive rates were =. I did notice that w/ the Actiontec, I got slightly higher connection speeds by forcing it to connect at v.90, even if I was dialing a server that supports v.92. But still lower than the old DSI 3635 v.90 modem. Since first posting, I removed the Actiontec, and tried a Zoom 3025c pci. Immediately the connection rates went up to where they'd always been with the DSI 3635. It would be incredible to think that only one out of 4 modems would work correctly. Is this possible? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 2/5/2004 11:03:43 AM Possible explanation: some modems tend to connect at a speed higher than can really be supported. You feel good ("Hey I've got a high speed"). But, almost immediately, the modem changes to lower speed. Put it to the test: check your throughput.... www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-thru.asp
