Dear Help

I have a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion XT983 with a Lucent Win Modem. In the past, I occassionally have had increasing difficulty staying connected for more than 30 seconds. Then after a number of dial ups it finally stays connected. This problem gradually deteriorates over a week or so, finally gets to the point where it only connects for less than a second or so every single time.

I reloaded the drivers for the modem. to no avail
I shut down the computer ( power off ) to no avail
I got mad, to no avail
I used profanities, to no avail
I used the back up IPS number, to no avail
etc. etc. etc.

Finally I used my other computer an old 486 and it has no
trouble connecting on the first try.

Then I remember that the last time I had the problem about six months ago I did a System Restore to an earlier date and lo and behold the modem started to connect on the first try time and time again.

I have no idea of what is happening, but it has happened three or four times during my two years of using this Wal-Mart Special. I even have installed the latest Lucent Driver that I was told about by HP.

Hope this helps those others who have been reporting problems staying connected during the first minute after authentication/registration.

Who needs to know this at Hewlett-Packard? Or how do I fix this permanently. Current driver is 8.28 and I now see that 8.30 is available.

Sincerely yours

Markus Ritter

One of your problem could of been here.
Total Physical Memory 128.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 10.34 MB
Total Virtual Memory 380.21 MB
Available Virtual Memory 53.46 MB

You might want to add some memory or shut down some programs that are running in the background.
Note the Available Physical Memory
