i am running XP 40ghd 512 ram. keep getting error 676 line busy.

this worked fine a couple of days ago. all i have done after is instal AVG 7.0 anti virus ( and for email )
this i noticed changed the email connection ports. it worked at first then had errors ( would not send emails)

so i uninstalled it. Still says same error.
I have uninstalled modem drivers and re installed , also taken internal modem out > rebooted then put back in PC and it recognised all ok but still same error.
I have tried to see if rrand is hold a port open but rrand is not in task menu.
Help please i am pulling my hair out.

PS i have tried the line and the connections on my laptop and all is ok so i guess its a software etc problem but i am now lost.

thanks in advance sorry to be so long.
cheers

charles

Have you removed the dun connectoid from the dial up folder and make a new one.
Does your local area require 10-digit dialing? Is so, make sure the area code is entered into your dialup settings.
In your dialup settings, make sure that you do not have "Use Area Code and Dialing Properties checked. The Windows dialing properties can cause this problem if they are misconfigured.
Check the country selection also.
Disable call waiting.

If your computer is set to dial a code to disable call waiting (like *70, 1170, or 70#) and you do not have call waiting on that phone line, you may get a busy signal. This is the same if the computer is dialing a 9 or 8 to access an outside line when it does not need to.

Open the Control Panel. Click the Network and Internet Connections option, then choose Network Connections. Note If the Control Panel is in Classic View, double click the Network Connections icon.
Right click your Dialup Connection and choose Properties.
Uncheck the Use dialing rules option. Your Local Access Number should be entered into the Phone number field exactly as it needs to be dialed.
Once you have corrected the number, click OK and try the dialup again.

Might want to read this and it tells how to remove this software. Run disk clean up also, remove cookies and temp file also.

If you want to use a good free anti virus software try avast. If you have set a go back date for xp I would try that also if before the install of this software.
