I have a customer with a usr56k internal modem. the specs don't really matter because this is a brand new modem out of the box. The problem is, when the phone line is hooked up to the internal modem, and the pc is booted into winxp pro, you here a rythmic clicking on the line when you listen to the dial tone on the phone. You can also hear this clicking when you try and connect. This clicking is preventing the modem from negotiation with the isp modem. When the modem is unplugged from the pc, you hear no clicking on the phone line. Odd eh, it gets even more odd. When I plugged in my trusty usr 56k external modem via serial port, there is no clicking on the line and it connects like a champ up to 45.2kbps everytime first try. So I figured the original modem in the pc as well as the new modem the customer bought were bad. So I brought the pc back to the bench and it tested flawlessly. I connected with both internal modems on every try with no clicking on the line with either modem.
The customer has had the phone company out there several times and they are saying that the lines are testing good. Oh ya, the pc he was using was an hp pavilion. The modems clicked with this pc. He decided to upgrade his mainboard (asus A7v8x-x)processor (athlon xp 2400) and memory (256 crucial pc2100). Low and behold, the clicking also is taking place with the new pc and both internal modems. the external is still working flawlessly. One more thing. I tested the upgraded machine at my bench as well and both internal modems worked on my phone line with no clicking involved.

First thing customer should do - connect the modem directly to the demarc, or disconnect all other telephone devices from line
www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp

Another device on line could be source of problem....

Also, make sure line cord connecting modem to phone line jack has only 2 wires connected through to each end.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for the reply Richard. We did try hooking directly to the telco box with both the internal usr modems and the external usr modem. The internal modems still had the rythmic clicking and wouldn't connect, but the usr external worked fine with no clicking. Wierd eh? I would appreciate any more suggestions. Do you think it could have something to do with a electrical grounding problem with the wiring in his house? I grasping for straws but I'm desperate. Thanks

Oh thank goodness, finally someone with the same problem that I have! From what I have read, I can guarentee its not the modem, I have tried 4 different replacements of the same modem, and I just put in a new brand last night. I have also had the phone company over here most of the day yesterday and he could not find any problem.
I have been dealing with the issue a little over a year now, and have learned a little bit. First off, it appears to be something inside the computer, because ANY power source connected to the computer will cause the problem, even a monitor that is plugged in, but, removeing all power from the computer seems to stop the clicking. The power socket is fine, I have tried many of those, the phone line is said to be "fine" no real proof on that one yet, since it hasn't happend at any other location so far, but I haven't had the chance to test this fully. Also the mother board has been replaced and it still clicked. My clicking appears to be completely random in behavior tho. The computer can be perfect for weeks, then all of a sudden it starts clicking. I have yet to find a solution to the problem, and if you guys come up with one, you will be my saviors, I trully believe I will need stress therapy after this is all over, so please HELP!
