Help required with hyperterminal.
I connect to remote modems to download data from truck tag readers they are connected to. When I try a new connection with my laptop (or any pc)in hyperterminal the modems answer fine but unless the connection settings are shown in the bottom of the hyperterminal window, a connection to the tag readers cannot be made. The settings should look like 115200 8-N-1 but show as 'auto detect'. Sometimes if I connect to a remote modem, click disconnect and then just press random keys the settings appear but now they do not. I hope someone understands what I mean.

Try setting up Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

Then, you can issue any needed initialization strings, dial phone #, etc.
Depending upon the kind of modem you have, and the modem you are calling, you should use protocol limit commands to no higher than V.34
AT+MS=V34
and, if the modem you are calling is operating at lower speed than 19.2k, use AT+MS=V32 or AT+MS=V22

Again, depending upon the modem you are using, the port settings you use in Hyperterminal may not have an effect.

Aloha! Richard.
