If you have a V92 connection, do you need the Propel, etc or any other acceleration? Thanks.

"6-Jan-04 - Faster Dialup - More ISPs - including some of the major ones - are offering "faster" dial-up accounts for an extra fee. "NetZero HighSpeed" for an extra $5 month and "up to 5x faster". "Earthlink Accelerator" ("free") "up to 5x faster." Some may compare these speeds to broadband. However, none of these services can increase the speed at which your modem sends or receives data to or from the Internet: they can only increase speed by reducing the amount of data. The bottom line: it's a good deal for the ISPs - there is little cost to them - high-profit. It's probably not a good deal for you: for the most part - and where it matters most (big downloads) - there won't be much of a speed increase."

I've found a reliable ISP offering connection w/ the download accelerator for $10/month. No cheesy software (i.e. Juno) to connect thru or annoying banners/navigation and advertising tools , just config a dun connectoid and your out on the net.
as far as the accelerator (PropelAC), apparently what it does is rout your connection thru a server that degrades the quality of images on the web page being loaded. It also stores data on your harddrive of all sites you've navigated to so it can reuse data to load the pages faster.
the best part, if there really is one, is you can config PropelAC to block banner ads, Flash art and popups to further increase the efficiency of your web surfing.
you can sign up for free at first and get 10 hours/month (if you go over they charge $1/hr with a max charge of $10, then it's really the same as their "Plus" service w/o acceleration).
btw, the email can be accessed using any email app you have (there is pop3 access instructions on the website).

Propel is the biggest Marketing gimmick to hit the Internet in a long time. The only way they can make the claim of 5/1 compression is if the ISP offering it refuses to support V92 with V44 compression. A v92 modem connected to a V92 server has at least 6/1 compression possible 8/1 and you get "call waiting" and "MOH" for free. Pre caching pages means you don't know if you have the latest WEB page from the sites you visit. Pre caching is not new and failed in the past because most popular web pages change often. The Propel software sets itself up as a server ( without your permission) on you computer giving itself complete access, and it spies on you. If you have a firewall giving it server access negates the reason of having a firewall. It sounds good until you realize there is nothing new they are offering and they have the gall to charge you for the service. Tracking your browsing habits and selling them to Marketing companies is what they are after.

Thanks for the tip about Propel. I have uninstalled it. It appears my Windows XP works just fine without it and the Modemsite modem that I purchased is great. My connection speed is 53.3 most of the time and the other times its 52. I think I'll leave acceleration alone.

I've noticed that the performance on PropelAC is spotty. and the previous post is spot-on in terms of the isp using the cached data to track your surfing habits. i've become more selective about using it. there are only certain sites that i frequent when i use the "accelerator". at some point broadband should be affordable or we'll see the restrictions lifted on dialup speeds.
