I have a Motorola SM56 Modem. I continue to see in the status box in the lower right icon, it would say "negotiating connection" and it will freeze my connection for seconds, minutes, or just disconnect me.
Its very annoying. If you think its my internet connection, have suggestions for the modem, or need more information about the problem just post something and I will be checking this routinely.
Thank you.

What OS are you using? Please post a modem log. Try removeing everything from the phone jacks. What drivers version do you have installed?

Try getting the AT#UD resulsts in hyperterminal.

1. Ensure that the telephone cable is securely connected at both ends.
2. Ensure that call-waiting is disabled. In most areas, the command *70 or #70 disables call-waiting. Check with your telephone company for the correct key sequence. (With call-waiting, the incoming call's click sound may be disrupting your call.)
3. Another phone extension in the house might have been picked up

The ATI3 command will give you modem info.If modem is connecting at to high of a speed for the line might try a lowwer speed to get a more stable connect.Might change phone cord, try other jack, try the telco box outside to see if the problem is in the line in the house.Remove everything from all phone jacks. Make sure phone cord is not near any power line or pc cable.

I am running Windows XP, I installed the drivers that came with the modem, and I have tried multiple phone jacks.

As for possible "conection" problems, Iv checked and rechecked every wire going from my computer to the street. This is a brand new house. Iv also tried another phone cord, but the thing is, when "negotiating connection" isnt happening, it runs fine, as fast as a 56k should. I believe its the modem or my provider...

As of today, March 27, I was on the internet for a grand total of 38 minutes. In that time, the modem stopped sending/reseiving information at least 20 times that were over 10 seconds each, some were over a minute. It finally froze for over a minute and then simply disconnected. But the times it wasnt frozen, it works perfectly.

Do you have a network card installed and not using it. Check the device manager for any network of lan card and disable it.Check if you have any program to auto update also.
