Hello,
I have an old IBM aptiva computer, very small and slow, but it does the job, i just surf the web mostly, i have a diamond supramax 56K PCI v.92 model 2751 modem right now, it connects usually at 49,000 wich is good, but there is 2 things i dont like about it, it disconnects a lot at times, other times it doesnt, also, the call waiting, net on hold function doesnt do right, and thats something i want so i dont miss calls. Ok, i am interested in getting a new modem, i want one that best will work with this old slow machine AND that the MOH, call waiting stuff works right without a lot of hassle trying to get it loaded and working, some say i should get a hardware modem because of my old machine, but i really dont know much about this stuff, so im wondering if you all could recommend a good modem that will do what i want and be the fastest it can be with my old computer? I was kinda looking at the 19.95 modem Richard offers on modemsite.com, i have heard good things about it..
thanks!
v.Richard

What processor and speed does your Aptiva have?

A modem with DSP - like the one I sell - will do just fine in any old machine. In many cases, it will do better than a "hardware" modem, especially if you have a good phone line/high connect speeds.

A softmodem - without DSP - generally a minimum of 266mhz processor is specified ....

Aloha! Richard.

its only 120 MHz, does rather well to be so small though..i am interested in your modem if it will maybe even better than a hardmodem, one thing though, actually 2 things, ok, my supramax always connects between 46,000 and 49,000, usually 49,000, will your modem connect at these speeds and as often as this supra? Also, does the MOH feature and call waiting feature actually work right on your? I read good things about it, just want the best one i can get since DSL wont be available any time soon here, so i want the best dial up and fastest i can get, and also something i can get the latest and greatest driver updates for, unlike my supramax.

can you tell me more about the modemsite modem? Does the call waiting feature work well? would it be better than my current suprax with conexant chip? How do i install the software for it and the call waiting? usually when i install a modem and turn on the machine and windows detects it and installs it, im guessing the modem has a disk with the software for the call waiting and drivers, how do you do it? very intersted in this, mainly for the call waiting wich this supramax doesnt want to work right, when someone calls, the box pops up on the screen that says 'incoming call' and the speakers make a ringing sound, but if i click on the 'accept call' icon and pick up the phone, all i hear is the modem making its sounds, it doesnt kick over to the incoming call..the supramax uses the faxtalk modem on hold 2.0 software..

Call waiting/MoH works.
The modem comes with driver CD that has setup program for modem driver, modem-on-hold software applet, fax software, documentation, etc.

Speeds - can't tell you whether the Modemsite modem would connect at same/higher or lower speeds than the Supramax - any of the above could be the case. But, to large degree, this is not a good measure of how the modem is actually performing: it's throughput not connect speed that matters.

The modem I sell comes with a custom CD and a 1-page installation instructions sheet - most people find the instructions/install procedure to be easily understood and completed.

Aloha! Richard.
