Jspots Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 5/11/2004 4:33:43 AM I just bought a Compaq Persario SR1030NX which has an Agere Win Modem (V92) and running Win XP home. My ISP is Earthlink. When I connect to my ISP my connection rate is only 24Kbps. When I connect using my older computer I connect at 48Kbps. My old computer is an HP Pavilion 6545C running Win 98. I’m using the same phone jack with only one computer connected at a time. Why is the new computer only giving me 24Kbps? Compaq and Earthlink support have been no help. I’m thinking Earthlink doesn’t support V92? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

Earthlink/V.92 support or lack thereof shouldn't have an effect on speed your modem connects at.

Jspots Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 5/13/2004 2:31:43 PM Richard, Here is the info you asked for. The data for the new computer is listed first followed by my old computer info. I got an error using ATi11 on my old computer. Thanks for looking at this. New computer (XP home V.92 modem) Ati11:
OK 05-13-2004 16:56:11.046 - File: C:\WINDOWS\System32\tapisrv.dll, Version 5.1.2600 OLD Computer Results (Win98 with v.90 modem) 05-13-2004 16:00:48.01 - Rockwell HCF 56K Data Fax PCI Modem in use.

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 5/14/2004 4:46:24 AM Looks like the HP computer has a Conexant HCF modem - the post-call diagnostics would be AT#UG instead of ati11 - would be helpful to see that - the modemlog from that modem is cut-off so I can't see some info needed; and, in order for the modem to show correct connect speed in Hyperterminal, you'd need to do: AT&FW2 before dialing (the 115200 connect is the port speed not the modem speed). The new modem - the modem could be defective if you really have a 56k-compatible line; are you using a 2-wire line cord between modem->line jack? Aloha! Richard. |
Jspots Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 5/15/2004 9:52:14 AM Richard, Here is the updated info on the old computer. As for the phone line I'm using the standard one. (Same line for both computers with only one computer connected at a time). The Com port for the new computer (the slow one) is COM 3. Could that be a problem? AT&FW2 OK ATD8090020 CONNECT 49333 AT#UG <EC LINK NAKS=0> OK |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 5/15/2004 10:11:21 AM My best guess - the modem you got is defective. Another possibility - the Agere modem/driver isn't able to handle your particular line conditions where the Conexant can - although I think the defective modem is more likely. The only thing you can do short of getting a warranty replacement would be the connect-modem-to-demarc test - The Com port assignment wouldn't have an effect on speed.
