On one computer, I communicate with a Bell 103 device at a speed of 300.
When I enter +ms=? the result shows B103 among the possible carriers.
On my new laptop the +ms=? results in a string which does not include B103. One of the carriers in the list is V21, which is listed as having a speed of 300. Is this a possible choice?
I have an old Microcom external modem which I used with a Windows 95 computer. Can this be used on occasion on the laptop with Windows XP?

The old modem can be used on the notebook if -
the notebook has a COM port (many new ones don't); or, if you purchase an adapter for serial port->USB so you can plug the old modem into a notebook USB port.

New modem - should connect to Bell103 device using init string of
+MS=V21
or, possibly
+MS=V34,x,x,x,x,x
where the x,x,x,x,x is in the format prescribed for your modem and specifying maximum up/down speed of 300bps.
What kind of modem is it? (Chipset?)

Thank you Richard for your suggestions. The choice of V21 worked perfectly with the PCTEL 2304WT V.92 MDC modem installed in my laptop. I was spared the (shudder) need to deal with a 14.4 modem.
Was it dumb luck that the installed modem could connect with the Bell device? When I'm about to buy a new computer, can I count on the installed modem having a V21 capability? If not, how do I deal with the prospective computer mfr to make sure that the installed modem has what I need?
Thanks again for your help.

It's been a given that modems support nearly all the old standards --- probably shouldn't change.

Aloha! Richard.
