I hope someone here can give me some insight. I'm working on a Compaq Presario 1266 laptop -- Windows 98 SE. I just formatted the hard drive and reloaded Windows, reinstalled fresh drivers from the manufacturer's sites and everything appears to be OK. There are no resource conflicts, no missing or corrupted drivers that I can see. However, the modem will not work. When in the Control Panel and click on Modems to do More Info (Diagnostic), I get this error:

The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on.

The modem in this computer is the same modem that came with the computer the day it was bought (I am the second owner). I have tried the System File Checker thinking that maybe some of the system files that control the COM port were corrupt. Wrong. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the modem and COM port several time. Same end result.

Let me just add that before I formatted the drive, the modem worked beautifully...stayed connected for hours and hours on end. Of course, Windows 98 does not automatically find the drivers -- you must find them manually (what I dislike most about Win98 besides the BSOD!).

What should I do next?

I am just about ready to scrap the computer again and format...hoping against hope that a fresh install will take care of any potential corrupt files lurking in the shadows.

Please help.

Thank you!

You need to get a driver for the modem and install with the modem vendor's setup program for the driver. To do that, the first step is to determine what kind of modem (chipset) you have -
