I cannot get the modem on a laptop to go online. I am getting a "white noise" when trying to dial out and not the dialling sounds.
After trying to connect with hyperterminal I got the message " No Carrier"
The modem seems to be working alright in Control Panel; the phone line is OK; I have connected a phone to modem whilst phone line is going into modem and am getting a dial tone there. I don't have call waiting on and there aren't any messages waiting.
I've run out of ideas: ANY help would be welcomed !

Is this a new modem/laptop?
Sounds like the modem may be defective.

What kind of chipset modem?
What driver is installed?

Make sure to use a 2-wire line cord between modem's line jack and phone line (that is, a cord with only 2 wires running through from end to end).

Aloha! Richard.

Hi Richard,
It's a Dell Latitude Laptop.
The modem is: Xircom Cardbus Ethernet 100 + Modem 56 (Modem Interface)
Drivers details are: C:/Windows/System32?Modem.sys
C:/Windows/System32/DRIVERS/serial.sys
I am using a 2wire cable to connect from modem to phone.

I'm afraid I don't know a great lot about laptops so if you can help-Terrific!
Ta!

This is a PC-Card plug-in modem you can remove?

The driver you've listed is only Windows-modem driver - the presence of serial.sys in Windows would lead me to believe you have h/w controller chipset.

What's your ati# responses from Hyperterminal where # = 3, 5, 6, 7, & 11?
What COM port is the modem assigned to?
Are there 2 phone jacks on this modem?
Have you looked at:

Aloha! Richard.

Hi Richard,
Yes, it is a plug in type modem.

When you mentioned drivers in your lastbut one messages I downloaded latest driver from the site you mentioned and installed them: driver details still show the same drivers!

and still won't dial: still getting same white noise then you can it's saying please hang up; please hang up etc,etc
modem still looks ood in control panel: I think the modem is US; do you?
Just a thought:Is there a possibility I may have to disable the network card side of it?
Cheers,
Fred

Good idea.
Sounds like the modem isn't actually taking the line - somtimes these solid-state DAAs will work on some phone lines but not others; sometimes they're DOA....

Aloha! Richard.
