Last week i decided to upgrade to Windows XP. Unfortunatly silly me didn't no that ill have to install all the drivers and stuff back. I managed to get all the Office programs which i had a Cd. Unfortunaly i dont have the Reload CD for my modem. I have lost all my Cd's when i moved my house. Now that i know i have an internal modem, i dont no which one it is. Therefore i can not connect to the internet. When i go to Control panel then modems, i tried adding the list of modems the computer has but non of them seem to work. It was working fine until i upgraded to XP. I only need to know which modem i need. Iam now stck because even if i install the windows 98 disk it still asks for the modem. plus XP is better. Can someone please help. Thanking you in advance for your kind corporation. Goran |

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 6/20/2004 5:59:59 AM Run regedit.exe (supplied with the OS) : Windows enumerates every hardware device in or attached to the computer & stores this information in the Registry. In winXP this Hardware ID is shown in the Properties for the Modem within “Phone and Modem” (Control Panel, Classic View). In win98 use <Start>-Run-regedit (try not to change anything--no undo, scary) & it will be found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum (winXP is at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CONTROLSET001\Enum, or CONTROLSET002 etc.). Entries for the ISA bus are stored under ..\Enum\ISAPNP, the PCI bus under ..\Enum\PCI etc. etc.. The sub-key names under each of these keys are the actual Hardware IDs found for all devices attached to the relevant bus. A little searching will reveal which device is a modem. “Copy Key Name” is under Edit. This info should come from the EEPROM.Modern, PNP-device modems have Hardware IDs which are stored by the manufacturer within an EEPROM chip in the modem. This ID is then used by the driver & other software to uniquely identify the device. The EEPROM also contains other info which can be used both internal & external to the device. Or at least, that is the theory - some manufacturers are such cheapskates that they do not include an EEPROM, and these modems can only have the chipset’s default ID. charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 6/20/2004 6:23:13 AM Check the modem for any numbers and post. Also can ID with the babt number. Governments are addicted to control & the Telecom authorities--as agents of Government--achieved this by licensing all devices that aspired to be connected to the telephone line. In Britain this was a BABT approval & in America a FCC approval (the BABT approvals have been discontinued - EU & all that). Neither carries any weight in the other country, and neither is found in the EEPROM - they are carried on official-looking stickers on the modem itself. |
