I am running Windows XP Home Edition with a USR5610B modem. All software/firmware is up-to-date (i.e. firmware at V5.22.70). I am using the USR driver, not the Windows XP driver. The problem is that I never get any compression through my ISP. The status window always says "Compression (none)". At every place I can find, I have compression turned on. Another interesting fact is that I am getting some VERY strange diagnostics in the modem log messages. I've inserted them below, but if you look closely you will see that they are the output of the AT#UD command fed character by character to the modem with each one getting "Unknown Response". What's going on?
Thanks,
Stu

You are looking at a measurement of compression where compression isn't taking place.
To verify/measure compression - you can measure throughput / do speedtests on highly compressible data -
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-thru.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/speedtest.asp

The AT#UD is discussed on
www.modemsite.com/56k/diag.asp :
"While many modems support the Microsoft Unimodem Diagnostic Command - AT#UD - and both Windows 2000 and XP support ..."

Richard,
You are, of course, 100% correct. Making the changes to the ".inf" file and updating the modem driver as documented on this website worked PERFECTLY. It completely astounds me that a company like 3Com can't get their modem driver files to work properly with the AT#UD. Has anyone tried to tell 3Com that they need to make these changes to their drivers?
Concerning compression, I now know (from the #UD diagnostics) that compression is turned on. However, it's not clear to me why, when I click on the connection symbol in the Systray and get the status window, I don't see compression "on" on the "General" or "Details" tabs. I'm pretty sure I have seen it "on" on other computers. I'm pretty sure I've seen a statistic there for the compression % for both, sent and received, but not on my computer.

The compression you are looking at is Windows' compression in the PPP-link. This compression is basically irrelevant if the modem has compression turned on.

If you turn modem compression off, and if you set networking tcp/ip properties for the dial-up to use compression, (and if the RAS has it enabled), you should see some compression in that indicator. However, the original modem-compression setting is probably best for overall throughput.

Aloha! Richard.
