okasaki Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 5/27/2004 6:52:43 PM I recently upgraded 2000 pro from Windows 98. During installation i was advised that my USR5699b faxmodem may not install properly. No big deal, I will just re-install from disk after installation. Two weeks later and it is a big deal. I have uninstalled the modem and re-installed to no avail. I have also changed pci slots and still no help. There does not appear to be any IRQ conflicts. I did notice that after I uninstall and reboot, windows does not recognize new pnp hardware, even in Add/Remove hardware it is still not recognized. I try to install from disk which is successful, then after reboot I recieve error code 10 device cannot start (it doesn't seem to pull drivers off disk). I then tried to remove from registry thinking system does not totally get rid of modem during uninstall. I am not totally proficient with registry but think I know enough not to cause any real damage. Still after deleting 3com keys and rebooting windows still does not detect the modem. I am definately at a loss and could use some advice. |

Winmodems require special driver & install program, and generally cannot be installed using Windows Add New H/W Wizard. In fact, attempting to install using the wizard can complicate or even prevent subsequent installation using correct install/driver. Windows2000 is like XP with regard to the 'COM Port in Use' issue discussed at

okasaki Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 6/17/2004 12:45:17 PM Thanks Richard, I am just getting back to you on this issue as I have been busy with school. The info you gave helped alot, however, I can not get rid of the com in use. Probably because I tried to add the modem through add/remove programs so many times. I went through everything you explained a few times, and it gets rid of it, but if come back in and look, all the sudden com 1 is in use again...any suggestions?? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 6/18/2004 7:41:24 PM If your PC has a built-in COM port (most do) at least 1 COM port will need to be assigned for it - and it will normally be COM1. This shouldn't be a problem as modem would then install on COM2 or higher. You can choose a different COM port for the built-in by assigning it in the same area to COM2 or whatever... If the modem still doesn't install with the correct USR driver install, you may need registry repair - I think there's a USR removal tool for the modem....? Charles? Aloha! Richard. |
