Nev Tl Posts: 4 United Kingdom	Posted - 6/3/2004 12:28:25 PM I set up a small network 3 months ago, with a Dell Server running Windows Small Business Server 2003 and 2 workstations running XP Pro. The server connects to Freeserve Anytime via a BCM V.92 56K Modem and the workstations connect via the server using a 'demand dial' connection. Everything worked fine until a couple of weeks ago, when internet access became virtually impossible. It seems that the modem in the server now connects about one time in 50 or so, the rest of the time getting error 678 - the remote computer did not respond. The modem drops each connection attempt after about 30 s. I can access other ISPs ( eg. Freeuk.com) on the 1st or 2nd dial out on a pay as you go service, using the same modem and phone line. I have also tried creating a new connection to Freeserve, but with the same problems. I can access Freeserve Anytime using another computer with a Conexant modem on the same phone line. Nev Tl Posts: 4 United Kingdom	Posted - 6/4/2004 1:32:35 AM Hi, I couldn't find a setting to increase the the 'time to achieve carrier before modem disconnects' in the connectoid. I did find something similar in Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/Modems/Properties/Advanced/Change default preferences/General/Cancel the call if not connected within ...... secs. I set this to 60 secs from 30 secs, rebooted, but the Error 678 still appears after about 25 secs. Could this be a setting at the ISP end? Nev.

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA	Posted - 6/17/2004 6:45:15 AM You might try to blind dial,put X1 in extra settings. Do you have voice mail on this line? Remove all devices from phone lines and try again.You might add ,,,, in front of the dialing number like this ,,,,XXX-XXXXXX each comma will give the modem time to detect the dial tone. Check modem properties and remove the check to wait for dial tone. Have you updated the modem drivers? http://modemsite.com/56k/bcm.asp With the modem speaker turn on do here a dial tone before the modem dials? Might also try slowing the modem down to V34 just to see if it is a line speed problem.
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA	Posted - 6/17/2004 7:21:04 AM Select [Start] from the task bar and then select [ControlPanel]. Click on [Phone and Modem Options] icon. Select [Modems] tab. Click on BCM V.92 56K Modem. Select [Advanced] tab. Enter ATS50.4=0S51=31 in [Extra initialization commands] field. Click "OK". The above will slow the modem down. Check with ISP to see if they support V92.
