I just got an external USR 56k faxmodem v.92 with ICN software. I have call waiting and my ISP supports v.92. My problem is that ICN boots up and says "Connected v.92 Waiting for a Call" but when a call actually comes, it doesn't recognise it and does nothing (the incoming caller hears ringing). I have not been able to find anything useful on USR's support web.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Win XP.

What's the model # of your faxmodem?
What driver/firmware version is reported in response to
at i7
and/or
ati3

What version of Windows are you using?

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks!

And the driver version is?

The 5633A is an HCF-USB external modem - USR is using licensed-from-Conexant HCF chipset (not a "real" USR with TexasInstruments DSP).

If you have the latest drivers/ICN software, consider returning modem and getting something else if you can; otherwise, try USR tech support-

Thanks very much for the information and advice. I've actually done both. Am following up with USR tech support and have also asked Dell for a Broadcom modem (which should be installed sometime this week). I don't trust Dell at all having gone through all sorts of grief with them just to get a v.92 modem that works properly and allows me to get calls while online without freezing my computer (as the conexant did). I've been at this for a month. Dell certainly has thrown away the good reputation they once had. Now they treat their customers with contempt. Too bad. There's still enough competition in the industry so that they will lose their customer base if they don't correct this problem soon.

Many thanks for your help. I need to be at home to get the version number of the drivers.

I have checked the modem log. It is not disabling call waiting and I haven't seen any code that indicates retraining.

The driver version is: 952.172.61.0

Right you are...it does have Conexant drivers!!! Piece of crap modem! Dell is supposedly sending an installer with a Broadcom modem tomorrow! I'll believe it when I see it, though, as they promised this 2 modem replacements ago and still hasn't materialised.

They FINALLY sent and installed a Broadcom v.92 modem today. It works!!!!!!!!!!!

Had to uninstall the Conexant version of MOH and some extraneous USR software, but otherwise, all is well. And gee, I only had to go through the Dell Mill for almost a month...but other than never buying another Dell as long as I live, I'm not complaining...

Thanks so much to those who offered their time and wisdom to me along the way. It helped enormously and probably saved me yet another few months of high blood pressure. You are the real service that Dell refers to in their ads...not the company cretins!!!

Cheerio, Nancy
