I'm working on two Dell Optiplex Gx1's, 500 mhz, but with only 64mb RAM, ECC. These were set up as part of a business network and still have a network card labled Com 3. I couldn't get the the old modem, an ancient 1990 Practical Perhipherals, to work. I tried disabling the network card and suddenly all the COM ports are reading "can't find enough resources, must disable some other device on the system."
Then I bought a couple of your PRAGMATIC PCI.v.92 Agere modems and put them in. The driver installed OK but it set itself up for COM 5 which doesn't exist.
I can't seem to get Hyperterminal to work either. I can't type in it. After trying a couple of setups per the modem instructions, I gave up and worked on the COM ports for a while. When I came back one setup said RING RING RING, but still no typing worked, and when I hit ENTER i get ERROR not RING,
Looking for any help I can get

The LT modems create their own virtual COM port - they cannot be installed on an existing COM port.
When the modem driver is installed, it will automatically assign the modem to a free COM port (COM2 if it is available).

If the modem is installing on COM5 it's because you've got hardware defined using the COM1/2/3/4 ports. The modem will work on COM5 with Windows/TAPI applications, but Hyperterminal (standard edition) does not support COM5 - so you wouldn't be able to use Hyperterminal to check or use modem in that situation.

What version of Windows are you using?
If you're not using the network card/old modem, I'd suggest shut down & remove them physically from machine;
run
ltremove.exe
which is part of the LT modem driver (will be in your \windows or a sub-folder of windows) to remove the LT modem driver as well; shut down again; then re-install the new modem which should result in new install on a lower COM port # (you can check ControlPanel->System->Device Manager for COM ports/modems, etc. as well).

Aloha! Richard.

Windows 2000 Professional
I did take out an old modem card, the Prac. Periph. The Modem you sent me (LT) installed fine as far as drivers go, and picked COM5
The problem is that COMs 1-4 all went kablooey before any of this happened. They all got yellow marks as soon as I disabled the Network card, which I think was using COM3, in an attempt to get the PRac Periph meodem to work. I've since renabled the NIC but the ports aren't back. They all show "not enough resources, disable some other device."
I'm not sure what you're suggesting or how it will help. My first action was to check Device Manager. I've already closed down, taken everything apart and started over several times. Hard reboots don't seem to work.
The only thing I can see that might help is removing the NIC. I just hope that doesn't screw up the whole machine, which was apparently designed to run on a network (ECC chips) - I think it was a training machine for doing stock exchange stuff using the Baseline application.
I'll do that and see that happens. If nothing I'll try the LTREMOVE and reinstall
Thanks

You can regain COM ports marked in use that really aren't by following same procedure as for WindowsXP listed at
