I have a 3Com USR internal 56K Voice/Fax modem which I purchased at Frys
Electronics in May of '99 for $150. It has performed very well with good
through-put since then with my Allvantage ISP up until about six months ago,
whereupon the connect speed gradually began to degrade from the always
obtainable 50.666kbs down to the point where now I rarely get a 50.666kbs
connection and when I do the through-put rate I get on the PCPitStop.com
download bandwidth test is often below 10kbs, and typically around 5kbs.
However, at the same site their upload BW test gives me very much higher
numbers >40kbs. This could be a clue as to what is wrong with my modem with
the SLOW DL numbers.

I borrowed a Toshiba 8000 Techra and tried it on my same phone line and same
phone number and it always connected at 52kbs and showed 42kbs through-put
on the same PCPitStop DL BW test. Based on this and the line connect diagnostics
shown below, would you agree that the problem is not in the phone line or server?

Since nothing has changed on my Win98 PC I suspect that possible upgrades to
the phone line and/or server have rendered the 1998 V.90 coding in my modem
controller obsolete. I have the 00568500ud.exe controller code update file from
the USR ftp update file server site on my HD ready to go, but I am afraid to run
it until I get some advice from this forum as to whether this is the wise thing to
do and some specific instructions on how to run the update.

Any assistance or advice given here will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ollie Angell

Don't be too concerned with connect speed - it is often not a good indication of the real quality of the connection - modem mfrs have incentive to 'cheat' on what the modem reports to you to make you think the modem is better than another.
www.modemsite.com/56k/faster.asp

Your USR modem reports connect speed of 49.3k which is very good and a peak speed of 50.6k in the diag you posted -
56k modems will up and downshift rates depending upon line conditions.

A modem that connects at 52kbps and gives 42kbps throughput is a perfect example - the 52kbps connect speed is a "lie".

Also see
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-thru.asp

A throughput test like that at PCPitstop is not the best indication of connection quality either.

Aloha! Richard.
