I've downloaded the Generic softK56 modem from RockwellConexant to Win98 and it works fine, except for the connection noises that it makes permanently whilst I am online i.e. scratchy noise minus the dial-up bleeps.

I've found quite a few postings with the same problem on various help-sites, but never a solution! Adding an MO string seems to be the common suggestion but this doesn't work as I, and others, have discovered.

Anyone know the answer?

What is the make and model of this modem? This most likly is a driver problem, had been a big problem when XP first came out do to no update drivers. They were telling everyone to use the 2000 drivers. People were even removing the modem speaker to kill it.

Thanks for the help guys.

It's an old computer, it was built-to-order about 8 years ago or something and I wouldn't have a clue who built it or what went in to it (it's not even my computer). I have no CD for the original modem or anything that's even remotely useful.

I found one solution online to the problem: one guy said he put some chewing gum over the modem's speaker and it reduced the noise by 75%!!

So, in light of the fact that this problem seems unfixable, can someone please tell me:

- Where do I find the modem's speaker to stick some chewing gum over it?! (Think it's an internal modem as there's no box.)

- If I end up having to buy a new modem, can I buy any external or internal to install, or is it more complicated than that?!

Thanks in advance.

How is the modem listed in the device manager,You could look at the modem itself to see what chipset it has or a FCCID# to find out who made it.Post a modem log please. Might also post the VEN number. Go to start, run, type in regedit,go to local machine, enum, pci.

For 9x/NT/2K/XP. What an amazing program! Aida, by Tamas Miklos, goes way beyond Windows’ native System Information tool in comprehensively summarizing hardware, OS, and software details on your computer. (It even lists software product keys! — even the one for Windows.) The Enterprise System is free for personal (non-business) use. Don’t forget to download the user’s guide.
NOTE: Regretably, Aida32 is now (3/24/04) a discontinued project. Creator Tamas Miklos will do no further development on it. No support is available for this program. Version 3.93 is the last version. Tamas graciously permits me to provide Aida32 to you directly. Aida32: Copyright © Tamas Miklos, All Rights Reserved Worldwide.
Where is Tamas now? Off on a new project. He’s now the CTO and EVP of Engineering R&D for Lavalys Consulting Group working on their Everest software system.)

Thanks for all the help. Looks like it's a glitch that I can't solve myself, you're all getting way too technical for me now! I'm just gonna buy a new modem.

Cheers,
Nat

When you remove the modem be sure to remove the drivers first then check the device manager to make sure there is no modem listed.Shut down remove the modem. You could boot up after remove the modem to safe mode and check for any ghost copies of this modem and remove also.Always let windows know what you going to do first and this is by removing the drivers first. When you remove this modem please post any numbers you find on it.
