I have a 56K ITU V.90 Data/Fax Modem. I have currently tried numerous "Internet Boost" and other support programs in that area. I cannot connect above/below 31200 bps. This is very annoying when I should be able to connect much faster, right? I have never connected at anything but 31200 since I received the modem, about a year and a half ago. I have read so many sites about increasing connection, but maybe you can help me out here. I play games over my internet and at 31200 it doesn't "lag" extremely bad, but downloading and waiting for webpages is slow. Please reply with some needed information as soon as possable. Thank You.

Just wanting the most of a 56k modem!

What model/brand/chipset modem do you have?
www.modemsite.com/56k/chipset.asp

If you have a phone line that's "56k-incompatible" 33.6k will be the maximum you'll ever get; on the other hand, if you do have a 56k-compatible line, updating the modem driver, or perhaps a different modem-chipset would help.
USR modems provide a good way of telling if you have a 56k-compatible line.

Thank you, and I have read those pages, my chipset is PCI/RSSI8003. Please explain to me how I identify my phone lines compatibility. And what seems to be best, internal or external modems?

What OS are you using? If you have a bad line no "Internet Boost" software will help. Pick up a phone, dial 1 do you hear any cross talk or anything like pops, click? The best way to check if the problems is in the house wiring is to connect to the telco box outside. You could remove everything from there phone jacks and try connection again. If connection gets better plug one thing back at a time to see what is causing the problem. Have you tried other isps? If running 95,98 or ME I would reinstall dial up networking.
Is this a name brand pc? Have you had a second phone line installed?

Im running Windows 98 on my E-Machine. I have recently changed ISP to BellSouth(Yesterday). I do not hear any noises within my telephone lines and I shall try routing my modem to the main box. I have also routed as of now strait to the wall jack, I had it going through a surge suppressor, made no difference. I have recently installed "Internet Turbo" (2 minutes ago) and trying to get it to optimise my system along with internet controls.

Emachines series "Etower" version i3. I cant tell you that number of the modem, maybe you could explain where to find it, then you could help me out. I did route my modem directly to the telco box and received again 31200 connection. Im guessing it is the wiring, maybe its not 56k compatable. Where can i find 56k compatable wiring where I dont have to spend a bundle of money. I may sound cheap, because I am, I have dial-up instead of DSL. I just want the best out of my dial up modem.

You will need to look on the modem itself for the fccid number.I would also delete the old dial up connectiod, reinstall dial up networking, make a new connection. Alot of these modem speed up software can make it worst.Post a modem log also please.

I would just like to mention that I have found better performance for my modems using ADSL line filters. They are completely compatible with your analog modem and they clean up the signal very nicely. Put one on every connection in your household, phone, modem, aux phone connection etc... for troubleshooting sake, have you disconnected every other phone/modem in the house that is hooked up to your phone line? Just have your single modem hooked up to the phone line with nothing else and test your connection out. This is not a problem (in 99% of cases) with ADSL line filters. (Which are not just for ADSL modems). Other than that, don't buy external USB modem's or Serial modem's, buy internal PCI modem's (Of a name brand). Hardware or software controlled modem use if up to the individual computer/phone line. Check out my reply in the "USB vs SERIAL" Thread.
