USA | Posted - 6/28/2004 6:41:31 PM Just thought I'd share with the forum that I found a modem which uses the Agere 1648c and supports Type 1 CID. Vendor: Phoebe Micro (http://www.phoebemicro.com) Model: Lunar V.92 Express It uses some sort of solid state DAA (LinkCom LAN0018-1) instead of electro-mechanical, so I assume that is what allows it to support Type 1 CID. The modem actually has model "I-306A" labelled on the board, so I think this company may be the real manufacturer: http://www.turbocomm.com.tw/product/driver/drv_i306a.htm It is also labelled "Eton ET166", so may be available under that product name. In terms of performance of this chipset/modem, I'm a little disappointed. On my admittedly poor-quality line, I get connect speed of only 28.8K and throughput of about 3.3KBps. With an external US Robotics V.Everything (a much more expensive modem of course) on the same line I get connect speed of 36K and throughput of about 40KBps. As usual with modems, your mileage may vary. |

USA | Posted - 6/29/2004 10:14:26 AM Correction on the troughput numbers I provided: - Agere LT Win Modem: 33kbps - USR Courier: 40kbpsThese were measured by transferring a ~900KB file with ftp. Both modems benefitted from compression since the throughput numbers are higher than the connect speeds. |

USA | Posted - 7/4/2004 12:00:13 AM I was using deiver ver 8.3 with the LT modem. Below are the requested results from the USR modem. Note that I had to dial manually from Hyperterminal to get these results, hence the short session. If I dialed using DUN, disconnected, and then ran Hyperterminal, the results were all zeroed out. USA | Posted - 7/4/2004 11:44:23 AM First of all, if the value of 3750 is above 50, you may have poor local phone lines and may want to check into noise. Now, take the level of 3300 and subtract it from the level of 3750. If the value is 25 or higher, you most likely have too many A/D, D/A conversions which indicates that you can not achieve 56k speeds. If the value is betwen 20 and 25, you MAY have too many A/D, D/A conversions and you may not be able to achieve 56k speeds.SNR Range (Note: SNR = Signal to Noise Ratio) SNR ( dB ) 32.3 Expected "Stable" Speed SNR 31-34 28,800-31,200 V.90 Status uu,5,12N,12.1,0,0N,0,37.3,58.6 Speed Shifts Up/Down - This field indicates the number of times your receive rate was bumped up/down due to your connection stability. If this number is above 10 you probably have a pretty unstable connection. Status - This field lists information regarding the server and phone line that the modem has detected. The fields are as follows: Item Number 1: This item indicates the type of Codec used, U-law or A-law. The US uses the U-law codec. Item Number 2: This item indicates the number of sign bitsand should be 5 under normal conditions. Item Number 3: This item indicates the the maximum transmit level of the host. If you experience a value of 6 or less, or 19 or higher there may be a signal or power problem. A Y in this field indicates that the server is not capabale of compensating for digital pads (thus providing for a worse transmit level) and an N indicates that the server is capable of this and the number indicated does not necessarily reflect the quality of your line (though if it is a poor value, then the quality may be even worse than shown). Item Number 4: This item indicates the sliding power window, which should be relative to item number 3. A poor value here may also indicate poor signal or power issues. Item Number 5: This item indicates the amount of padding used inbetween the client and host on the telephone circuit. A value of 0 is the best, indicating no padding, a value of -7 indicating 3db of padding, and a value of -15 indicating 6db of padding which could cause potential problems. Item Number 6: This item indicates the number of Robbed Bit Signal links in the telco circuit between client and host. You can still achieve 56k type connect speeds with RBS links, however if you have a Y here, this indicates a type B Codec which could mean that you are on a SLC96 (often referred to as a Slick). A slick is used when there are not enough twisted pairs in the area to meet customer needs. When a slick is used you are given extra Analog to Digital/Digital to Analog conversions, thus making v90 speeds impossible. Item Number 7: This item usually indicates a value of 0. I do not have a clue as to what it is supposed to be for. Item Number 8: This item indicates SNR using another type of training. Use the above chart to find the meaning of your SNR value. Item Number 9: This item indicates the Codec Distortion. A value here that is higher than 26 could indicate troubles. (Note that item 9 works differently on v92 USRs.) Item Number 10(only shown on v92 USRs): I do not yet have a clue as to what this item is supposed to be for. Have you had a second phone line installed. Have you ever tried connecting to the telco box outside or check the wire connect in the box?
