USA | Posted - 7/1/2004 12:28:16 PM All,Just had lightning hit the house last week...yes hit the house. Have a surge protector on system with phone lines connected thru it as well. Needless to say my modem fried. Bought a new USR 56K (5660A) internal V.92 PCI Faxmodem. Installed on OS=WINXP Pro, Compaq AMD Desktop circa 1999. Previous modem was a generic v.90 PCI internal modem. Install goes ok with drivers included in package except it indicated not Windows Certified. Remove and re-installed a dial connection to ISP. Problem: dials ok, auths with ISP and connects but I cannot see websites nor can I download email and connection drops within a few minutes. I have tried using a different ISP, same result. I have moved the modem to a different PCI slot...same problem. My concern is there may be further damage to PC due to lightning strike but everything else seems to work ok. Thoughts?? Thanks in advance dtc. |

USA | Posted - 7/1/2004 6:51:15 PM Try connecting to ISP with Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port - you should see a login prompt after CONNECT (you might have to hit ENTER) - while you can login, you can't browse with Hyperterminal and seeing garbage after loggin in is normal as you are in a PPP session not supported in Hyperterminal. If this works, your problem is in XP's setup for networking/dial-up networking. www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp Aloha! Richard.

USA | Posted - 7/2/2004 6:25:54 AM pulled latest certified drivers down from USR site. Re-installed modem and same problem, move to a diff slot...same problem. |

USA | Posted - 7/2/2004 8:25:09 AM Might be a problem in the phone line itself. Maybe try removing everything from the phone jacks and connect the modem right to the phone jack with no surg device.Surg device could be bad or other devices on the line. Might also connect to the telco box outside. If you pick up a phone and dial 1 do you here any noise on the line. Did you remove the old dial up connecoid and make a new one in the dial up folder. Did you remove the bad modem's drivers before removing the modem? Might also check with your isp to see if they have a V92 number to connect.Might also disable V92. Would like to see a modem log please. If you are using a firewall might disable to check for problems but reinable when done. Note: The next storm remove the phone line from the modem, most surg device can not disconnect in time for such a high voltage surg. Edited by - charles on 7/2/2004 11:44:26 AM

USA | Posted - 7/3/2004 9:43:09 PM If the HT works as you indicate the problem is not likely to be with the modem itself - rather with your networking setup or connectoids.Suggest - remove all connectoids; set up dial-up networking over again and create new connectoid. www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp Aloha! USA | Posted - 7/4/2004 6:19:04 PM ok, I've completely removed and re-installed the modem drivers and removed and reinstalled the connections (two different ISPs). I've tested it at another location (different phone line). I also have a laptop which can dial up fine from my home location...same phone jack. I've made sure the settings on modem and connections match the laptop. I've also disabled v.92. I've even changed my password at the ISP. Same results...connects but cannot view web pages and it drops the line in about 2 mins. Even on the other ISP connection. USA | Posted - 7/5/2004 7:17:38 AM Try forcing the modem to connect at V34 to see if it will hold the connection. Might also disable the firewall if setup to check for a problem there. If you have a NIC card disable it in the device manager. Have you done a cold boot since modem install? Could also check in safe mode for ghost hardware in device manager. Make sure the phone line is in the modem jack in back of the modem.Click Start, and then click Internet Explorer to start Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, double-click the dial-up networking connection under Dial-up settings to display the Dial-up networking connection Settings dialog box. Click to clear the Use a proxy server check box. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each dial-up networking connection that is listed. Also run the Disk Cleanup Utility Might also check the device manager for old hardware uninstalls. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q315539 Edited by - charles on 7/5/2004 8:13:08 AM |

USA | Posted - 7/5/2004 8:55:56 AM Open your Control Panel, and double-click the Internet Options icon. Click onto the Connections tab. If you have a dialup account, highlight your dial-up connection then click the Settings button next to it. The options on this screen should not be check marked; remove any check marks that may be there. Click OK. DSL, cable and dialup users: click onto the LAN Settings button. There should be no options check marked on this screen either; remove any check marks that may be there. Click OK, then OK again. |

USA | Posted - 7/6/2004 7:48:47 PM ok...taking Charles advice I discover via showing hidden devices in Device Manager that there are what appears to be remants of the PCTEL modem that was in use prior to lightning strike. There is XP Vmodem, XP Vpctcom, and XP Vvoice in the non-plug and play section of the Device Manager. The drivers are PCTEL drivers which is the brand of modem I was using. I've gone ahead and "uninstalled" all three...cold booted...and same problem. I've checked that the connection settings in Internet options are NOT checked as indicated by Charles. The USR modem I'm using is the second brand new modem I've tried. The first was a CompUSA brand and it had the same problems which prompted me to return it for a USR brand. I'm pretty sure I have all the other modems and drivers uninstalled but at this point it may remain as an issue. I'm going to once again diable the v.92 features in the Init String and search for PCTEL chipset info...stay tuned. dtc |

USA | Posted - 7/7/2004 1:03:16 AM The last modemlog you posted shows disconnect reason being unable to retrain - try limiting your connect speed to lower rate (say 48k); try a V.34 connection only.... You've got a 'Conexant/USR modem' I think? - not really usr - but a Conexant HCF 'in disguise' ? Aloha! Richard.
