I have an external USR 56K modem. Before that, an internal Lucent Winmodem 56K. I have been struggling for many months to get a decent connect speed at a regular rate. As it stands now, 26400 is the usual connect speed. But sometimes I'm lucky to get anything faster than 19000. Other times (rarely)I can connect at 36000 but the connection is very unstable. I have two ISP's, one which is only slightly better at connect speeds. Thanks to your site I can tell from the handshake that the V.90 fails each time and I hook up with V.34 modulation. I tried the ATY11 command several times in a row just now and got the following...
33000-23
37500-42
(connect speed-26400)
33000-22
37500-35
(connect speed-26400)
33000-93
37500-93
(connect speed-24000)
33000-93
37500-93
(connect speed-26400)
33000-22
37500-35
(connect speed-26400)
33000-93
37500-93
(connect speed-26400)
Okay, so now I'm really confused. I've tried testing the phone line for static. Seems ok. I've disconnected all other phone lines in the house and gone directly from jack to modem. Two different modems, same results. Two different ISP's, both V.90-enabled (so they say). Same results. There is a slow down when line traffic gets busy, but I still can't get a decent connection at four in the A.M.

Excuse me. While typing this, I was disconnected. Upon reconnecting, I now have a V90 connection and the connection speed shows 30666(this according to the 3com modem mgr). Still a slow speed though.
Wish I had a friend at the phone co. Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.
John

The diagnostic screens from your modem after a connect, & the a/d y11 results may help you determine what the problem is:
