Hi,
Recently i upgraded a pc from win98 to winxp. all did seem to be going well untill i needed to install a new modem.

The existing modem(swannsmart external) is playing up so i got a new internal one(Dynalink 56k). now when i did the O/S upgrade the swannsmart was the current modem.

when i tried to install the new internal, xp finds that there is a new device (PCI simple controller etc...) but when i install the driver, all seems to be going well untill it finishes installing and says "There was a problem during the installation"
"data is invalid"

Now i have checked for newer updated drivers, and i even tried a different modem to no avail.

To my knowledge i believe that there is some sort of issue with the upgrade from win98 to winxp. I'm not sure but i think the device drivers may be getting overwritten by the previous drivers from win98???

as i said i am not sure but this is the only answer i can come up with.

if someone can help me out by offering an explantion or a cure for this problem i would be very appreciative!!! As this problem has been haunting me for a week now!

Thanks for any help offered

What driver are you installing? Win9x drivers can't be used for XP.
What chipset does the new modem have?

What is the modem model, there are differant agere model chip sets also drivers for the land down under. What is listed in the device manager for modems.Do you have sp1 installed? On some of the lucent modem you need to remove the modem drivers, make sure no modem are listed in the device manager, shut down remove the modem.Boot up with out modem, install the drivers and do not let windows reboot, shut down put modem in pc.Do you have any drivers still on this pc from the old modem?

Is there any way you could back up you data and do a clean install of xp? You will have alot less problem with the upgrade. If you do this do it with everything remove from the pc modem,printer,scanner...ect.Then install one hardware at a time.
One othe thing you might try is to use the update driver for the PCI simple controller.

Need to remove all modem drivers, this will remove the lucent drivers.Remove other modem drivers as well.
1. Insert the provided CD into your CD-ROM drive. Run
Ltremove.exe from the subdirectory \Driver\Win9x (or
relevant directory according to your operation system) of the provided CD.
2. When warning message appears, click Yes.
3. When prompted to restart your PC, click Yes or No as
required.

Once the hardware installation is finished, turn on your computer and the system should detect the modem upon startup. Insert the provided CD into your CD-ROM drive to start driver installation.

After your system auto-processes the driver installation for your modem card, you should follow the steps below to update its driver. Otherwise, the device may not be compatible with the applications enclosed on the CD.

1. Click Start / Settings / Control Panel / System / Hardware /Device Manager.
2. Double-click Modems and right-click Lucent Win Modem.
Select Update Driver.
3. When Hardware Update Wizard screen appears, select
Install from a list and click Next.
4. With Search for the best driver selected, check ONLY
Include this location in the search. Click Browse to locate
the path of the driver: X:\Driver\WinXP (where X is your
CD-ROM drive letter) and click Next.
5. If compatibility prompt message appears, click Continue
Anyway.
6. Click Finish to complete updating driver.
