papua Tl Posts: 6 Indonesia | Posted - 7/10/2004 6:30:23 PM Hello All of a sudden my connection speed has dropped from usually 44 kbps to 14 bps (Windows 98 SE, Win LT modem). If I plug in a Windows XP professional laptop (Toshiba Software Modem AMR) into the same line I get 52 kbps. So I think the phone line is good. I upgraded the driver of the modem to agere 8.3. Still I get the creeping 14 kbps rate. I ran the latest version of ad aware and found no spyware. Any advice out there?? Thanks! |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 7/12/2004 10:04:47 PM Have you tried reinstall dial up networking. Might also check your start up folder for any program that might be holding the modem like fax software. Have you delete the connectoid in the dial up folder and make a new one? |
papua Tl Posts: 6 Indonesia | Posted - 7/13/2004 8:39:22 AM Thanks...but now I'm down to 12,000 kbps. Perhaps it's just a coincidence. I'll try again. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 7/13/2004 9:41:01 AM Do you have the modem plug in to the phone jack or is it connected to a surg device? Have you added any new software before this happen. Do you know the make and model of the modem? Please post a modem log.Might also run ltremove.exe and check the device manager for any modems listed remove.check the add remove program for any lt modem drivers remove.Go to the control panel, double click modem,if any listed remove, run regedit look in local machine, enum, pci for any other modem install remove. reboot when windows find new hardware click cancel, run setup on drivers, reboot windows should find new hardware and install the drivers for it. Might also reinstall tcp/ip Be sure to check the device manager in safe mode for any ghost hardware that windows think is still installed.98se has a problem with this. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 7/13/2004 10:03:05 AM In you dial up properties make sure you have log on to network checkmark removed also NetBEUI IPX/SPX check removed in not needed. http://modemsite.com/56k/connectoidedit9xs.asp |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 7/13/2004 10:40:32 PM Might also go in safe mode, device manager and remove the modem and reboot.Let windows reinstall the modem. |
papua Tl Posts: 6 Indonesia | Posted - 7/14/2004 7:59:53 AM Thanks very much. Here is the modem log: 07-14-2004 22:00:38.10 - Agere Win Modem #2 in use. Anything suspect here? Thanks again. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 7/14/2004 9:47:14 AM Note in your log you are showing Agere Win Modem #2 in use. You are showing more than one modem installed. Is this correct? I would go to safe mode,Go to start, run type in ltremove.exe Then go to the device manager and check for any modem install, remove.Go down to ports, remove any com ports that are there,do not remove lt ports.Remove your dial up connectoid in the dial up folder.Boot back to windows and reinstall the modem.Check log again to see if there are two modems installed. Might also run regedit and go to local machine, enum, pci go down the list and make sure there is only one modem installed.Look for VEN_11C1 Do you know the make and model of this modem? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 7/15/2004 10:32:50 PM There's a fair possibility that 'all of a sudden' either the modem had a failure (replacement in order), or something related to its connection to phone line/network changed. Try another line cord (one with only 2 wires); try connecting to the demarc or without anything else plugged into the phone line; and, try the laptop from other location/phone lines. Aloha! Richard. |
papua Tl Posts: 6 Indonesia | Posted - 7/16/2004 1:51:54 AM Hello I deleted the original Win LT modem when all of this mess happened as per advice, and installed the updated driver which changed the modem name to "Agere Win Modem". The Agere Win Modem #2 "label" came from the fact that during re-installation, the program only offered COM1 and/or COM2 (or LPT1) in the drop down list of ports, but since it is a software or "internal" (if that's the right word?!) modem, it needs to use the "logical" descriptor "COM3". There is no physical "COM3" in the drop-down list offered for selecting ports. I then deleted the first modem: Agere Win Modem (i.e. the "using" COM1) since this didn't work anyway. This left me with the Agere Win Modem #2. If I plug my Windows XP laptop into the same phone line I get 52 kbps, so I think the line must be ok... When I get home, I'll try these other tips... Thanks very much! |

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 7/17/2004 7:37:44 AM No problem just needed to make sure the modem was bad. I would replace it with one that would support V92 if it is supported there. Let us know how it come out. Take care. |
