I had been experiencing frequent disconnections from my ISP on an IBM Aptiva 2158-530 (vintage 1999) running Win 98 SE. My modem is a Rockwell HCF 56K Speakerphone PCI modem. The ISP recommends as a first step ensuring that one has the latest modem drivers installed. So I dutifully went to the IBM PC support web site and downloaded the latest drivers (Conexant Winmodem driver for Windows 95/98 - Aptiva). The download and install went fine. When I reboot, however, I get the Windows "Add New Hardware Wizard" searching for drivers for "Wave device for Voice Modem". I tried pointing it to the directory where I had downloaded the modem driver, but it would not recognize it, so I get the message "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device." Continuing in the Wizard produces the final message "Windows has not installed a driver for this device". Lastly, if I try to log on to my ISP I get a Windows "blue screen of death". (I am connecting here via a different computer).

Strangely, or so it seems to me, when I look via Control Panel / System / Modem / Device Manager the driver file details reflect the new modem driver has installed. So I am lost as to why Windows doesn't recognize it or what the heck is the Wave Device it is looking to install a driver for?

Any help or direction any can provide will be appreciated. IBM has apparently pulled the support forums they used to have on www.pc.ibm.com/support.

Have you tried a cold boot that is turn power off to pc. What do you show in control panel, double click modem? The two files that control wave device is Serwave.vxd and mmdevldr.vxd both should be in the system folder. Check in modem properties and see what is under connect using. Did install change the com port the modem was? Might also boot to safe mode and check the device manager under modems.Do you show any com ports in the device manager?

If you can not get this worked out might do the above to get the modem to work. Then do the upgrade.
