Hi,
My sister has a SM56 Motorola modem that she needs to put a command in the special settings area to help her connect. Whenever she puts the string in, and closes the box, the string disappears...she can't save it. She is trying to limit the speed and tried putting in several different strings, such as %B40 and %B22 (not at the same time) but as soon as she closes the window, the command disappears. Also,I don't know if it makes any difference, but when she tries to click on the button for her port settings in the modem box, nothing comes up. She has Windows98. We tried reinstalling the modem but the same thing happened after the restall.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I would reinstall dial up networking first. Might also boot to safe mode to see if there are any ghost modem installs. Please post a modem log.

She reinstalled dial-up networking and it didn't change anything. When she tries to log on, it takes 3-4 minutes to log on and then after she is online for a couple of minutes she is knocked off. That is why we are trying to change her settings but can't save anything.

Note she is making a V92 connection.Might need to use the +MS= command.Try +MS=V90 Has she check with her isp to see if they have a number just for V92.Might have her go into hyperterminal and type in AT+MS?
Might also make sure that log on to network is not check in dial up networking for the long log on.
http://modemsite.com/56k/connectoidedit9xs.asp
Also make sure that this modem is shown in the connect using windows of dial up properties.Might also check the device manager in safe mode for ghost installs of modem if more than one modem listed have her remove all of them and reboot.windows will find new hardware and install the drivers. Are there more than one connectoid in the dial up folder?

She doesn't have log on to network checked and all of the other settings are correct. I think you are correct that she needs to add a string to her modem but everytime she goes to control panel > modem and enters a string in the special settings window, it disappears as soon as she closes the window.

Have her put the string in the dial up connectoid not device manager. Have her double click my computer, dial up networking and right click the connection icon, properties, cinfigure, connection, advanced.

If there is more than one connection icon remove them all and make a new one.

Try this string. This command set up is out of the drivers help file.
+MS=p,q,r,s,t,u
p options: Specifies the modulation mode
q options: Specifies the Automode option
r options: Specifies the minimum data rate in the Tx direction
s options: Specifies the maximum data rate in the Tx direction
t options: Specifies the minimum data rate in the Rx direction
u options: Specifies the maximum data rate in the Rx direction

This would be the string to use below
+MS=V92,0,300,33600,300,40000

Or could try this
+MS=V92,0,,,,40000
Might also adding ATE1 to the front of the string.

If this does not help I would think maybe a com port problem or modem is sharing irq with other device. Have her check the connect using window in dial up properties, click the drop down window,is there other modem listed there. I would also go to safe mode and make sure there is not more than one modem listed or other modem listed from past installs. remove all modem in the device manager,go to ports remove only the com ports, reboot and reinstall the modem, windows should find new hardware when you reboot from safe mode to windows. What com port is the modem on and is there any com ports listed in the device manager? Might need to disable the com ports in the device manager and reinstall the modem. If this is a new modem install might try other slot. What is the driver version?

Tried everything you said but the settings still will not stay set. As soon as you close the window and then check back to see if they are still there, they are gone.
Her modem is on Com4, there are no conflicts, only 1 modem installed, and her driver file version is 3.00.54 and the hardware version (in case you need that) is 1.0.01

Tring to find info on this driver but have not yet.
http://www.motorola.com/softmodem/driver.htm
Might try manually force the modem onto a different COM port using the SM56 Helper
application (COM Ports tab) in the Windows System tray (just to the right of the Task Bar).
Is com4 listed in the device manager?
Might also Reset modem parameters to default options by entering AT&F in hyperterminal.

What is the ISP that she is using.Using AOL?

Perhaps the Window that is being closed is not being closed correctly? (IOW - must use OK/OK/OK sequence and never press a Cancel button)?

Aloha! Richard.

Hi,
Com4 is listed in the device manager, she's not using AOL (her ISP is ticon), and I'm not sure how to reset the modem parameters to default options by entering AT&F in hyperterminal. I've never really used hyperterminal for anything. Which driver should she get on that page? She has windows 98.

Ok I think we have found the bug,These modems use a software port and it should not be listed in the device manager. The com ports you see there are hardware ports. If the device manager shows com4 and the modem is on com4 you will have a hardware conflict. There is a number of ways to fix this. First if there is no other hardware on this pc that is using com4 then have her disable it in the device manager, reinstall the modem. It would be best to disable all com ports that are not being use by other hardware. Have her also go to the device manager, double click the computer at the top, check if other hardware is sharing the same IRQ with the modem. Other way would be to disable the com port in the bios and reinstall the modem. Now for the drivers, need more info from the modem,Would be best to have the make and model if not known look for the FCCID#.

If this modem is just a data fax pci I would think the W98_DF_PCI_84.41.exe would work.
If she want to upgrade the drivers she could just unzip them in a folder on the desktop and run the sm56set.exe file.

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that my sister has been sick and so she has been unable to try to work on the problem with her computer. Thanks for all of the help given and when she is better she will try the last things mentioned.
Thanks again...all the help really is appreciated.
