I have a BCM V.92 56K Voicemodem, in a Dell Computer..

It works fine, always has.. But several weeks ago, I was looking for ways to limit my connect speed for a more stable connection (speed wasn't an issue)..

So I was fiddling around in all sorts of areas, looking for ways to do this. Eventually, I found something which I thought was clever, and it worked perfectly. It limited it to the exact scope i specified 22-28.8k ...

But now, I am trying to figure out what I did, because I want to change it back !! ack!

I cannot for the life of me figure out what I did..

I tried all the obvious things, like changing the Modem port speed back to 57600 in Phone and Modem Options --> Modem Properties --> Modem Tab...

I also have tried the Properties-->Configure buttons on the connection status tab and set it to 57600 like it used to be as well..

But I know that those obvious things wasn't what I originally did to limit the speed..

This was soemthing a bit more involved I think..

I guess my question is, what are all the possible ways of limiting or changing connection speeds through software options / menus / windows / etc..??

I know it wasn't anything done on the hardware itself, and it wasnt any init strings.. it was just a simple changing of speed in a drop-down box SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW.. but I'm now completely lost as to where or what.

Hmm, strange, it connected at 31.2 bps

That's more than it has been doing normally 24-28ish bps, but it's still not the old 38-44 i used to get before messing with something.

Any suggestions?

and thanks very much for your time.

Can't see anything in the log were you may have made a change. What OS are you running? What model pc? I would put the port speed back to 115200. I see that you are making a V92 connection, might try a V90 to get a more stable connection or even a V34. Have you always had a connection problem? What isp are you using?

OS: Windows XP
PC: Dell Dimension 8200 (w/ RDRAM)
I havnt always had a connection problem.. These low connection speeds started happening when i specifically specified them to do so, somewhere in my computer.. I cant remember what option, menu, file, or anything I altered though to get these results.

It's not even really a "problem" of sorts, I still can function and do what i need to do witht the 28.8 connections, but I would just like to be able to get back to the 30-44k connections I used to get.

My ISP is earthlink.. One of the only options in my area. I used to be with Stargate, but they were bought out by earthlink not too long ago.

Thanks again :)

I will try your suggestions, and post later.

Try adding +MS=V90,1 in the extra settings to see if you can get a better connection. Might check with other access numbers.
Double click My Computer.
Double click the Control Panel.
Double click Phone and Modem Options.
Click the Modems tab.
Click the Properties button.
Click the Advanced tab.
In the "Extra initialization commands:" field, type in the initialization string.
Click OK and OK again.
Close the Control Panel and other windows or applications that are open and reboot.
Attempt to connect to the Internet and remain online to test the connection stability/speed.

Might check your change here.
Double click My Computer.
Double click the Control Panel.
Double click Phone and Modem Options.
Click the Modems tab.
Click the Properties button.
On the General tab, check the speed listed in the "Maximum Port Speed" drop-down menu. Change the speed if necessary.
Change to 115200
Some other things to check for connection
