Sorry for lack of info. A client wishes to transfer data to us via modem, using some old software called datatalk32. My latop is approx 1.5 yrs old but have never had to use internal modem(am on company network). When testing it earlier this week I can connect out from it, but when I try testing it by ringing the line the modem is connected to, nothing happens. I don't want modem to take voice calls - just receive data from client.

You can have the modem take the call by puting S0=2 in the extras setting box.You can set the modem to answer on the number of rings.Just change the 2 to what you want.Note 0 is zero. Can't find any info on the program datatalk32
What OS are yoou using.
S0=
Number of Rings to Auto-Answer: Sets the number of rings
required before the modem automatically answers a call.

OS is Win2000. datatalk32 (see www.datasoft-direct.co.uk)was developed in UK 8yrs ago(our client has been using it without problems for a number of years).

As Charles said, modem must have
s0
register set to something greater than 0 to autoanswer.

You need to be running terminal program (datatalk may be a terminal program?) on both machines; the answering machine must have the port opened and modem initialized with the s0 register set. Alternately, you can manually issue an answer command by typing
ATA
when the modem detects
RING

You could use Hyperterminal connected directly to COM port to do this assuming Datatalk uses file xfer protocol that is also supported by Hyperterminal.
