What OS are you using.Looks like a hardware or com port conflict. If using xp.

I am using Windows98. I am trying to install the modem in a notebook computer that is a DFI 8240 which I have been told is the same as a Mitac 5027 or a ChemBook 2700 Series.

http://www.team-solutions.com/Products/ISAPCI/PCDrive/PCDFAQ9x.htm#CardBus%20Network

Work around

Before installing the CardBus network adapter, open the "Device Manager" select the "Network adapters" key and select the network adapter that is pre-existing in the PC. Open the properties for this network adapter and select the "Disable in this hardware profile" checkbox (make sure there is a "tick" in the box) and then click "OK".

If your PC locked up as a result of this problem, then it is possible the installation of the CardBus card did not complete correctly. The "Device Manager" may show the card as working correctly, but it does not appear as a network device when "winipcfg.exe" is executed and communication over the network does not work. If this occurs, go to the "Device Manger" and select the CardBus network card under "Network adapters", right-click on the CardBus card and select "remove". Make sure the existing network card is disabled (as described above), then eject and re-insert the CardBus card. Windows will then re-install the drivers for the CardBus card and the device should work correctly

Are you installing the drivers first than shut down, put in card boot up.Are you showing any errors in the device manager?

I have tried all these things, and still no matter what I do when I try to do anything with the modem after it has been installed, the computer still freezes.

I do have an Infrared Communications PNP Serial port (PNP 0510) that I have tried to disable & still nothing. Could this Infrared thing be causing a problem?

Thanks.

hello again, there are no red x'x or marks of any kind, no IRQ problems that I can see. The device manager says the device (modem) is working properly.

I wonder if the laptop is too old to be running Windows 98.??? Although I did install and use the modem a couple of times last year and was able to connect to the internet. There are no other modems installed.

You do not this port in not using it.
Might be best to disable this in the bios. What com port is the modem on.I would remove the driver, remove the modem, boot back up and make sure there is no modem listed in the device manager, boot to safe mode and check for any modems listed or pcmcia device.go down to ports and remove all com ports, reboot to windows,go to start, run and type in regedit, click ok,go to local machine, enum, pcmcia, and check the ven number, remove any modems that are listed. reinstall the modem.

Might check here also.

If you have the drivers on a disk there is a good help file for the modem.
1.Insert the modem and remove all other PC Cards.
2.Press the Start button
3.Select Run
4.Type C:\MHZ\UNINSTAL and press ENTER
5.Follow the instructions
6.Use the Installation Guide and Modem Installation diskette to completely reinstall your modem

There are some conflicts with SystemSoft's CardWizard for Windows 95 and 3Com modems. If you have installed a 3Com or Megahertz modem while not running SETUP on a machine with CardWizard installed, you may not have the full functionality of your modem, or it may work incorrectly. To correct this problem, follow the steps above to reinstall your modem.

I am using com port 3. I finally got the computer to where I can click on this port and it doesn't freeze up, but I do get a message saying COULDN'T OPEN PORT.

I will try some more of the things you mentioned. Thanks.

Go to device manager, click the + next to the modem, click driver, what is listed. Do you have Vcomm.vxd with () around it? Also try hold down ctrl, alt, delete and end rnaapp and try again.Do you have com3 listed in the device manager?

What IRQ is the modem on and is it sharing it with other hardware?Go to device manager, double click the computer and check what irq it is on.
Make sure that your modem is configured correctly and that it is not sharing an IRQ with any other devices. Most modems will want to use IRQ5 or IRQ3.
If the modem is set to IRQ5 and if you have a sound card installed, make sure that they are not sharing the same
IRQ.

Could also remove the com port in device manager and reboot.

Look in the driver file and look in the readme file. It will give some irq and com port settings. Have you ever ran a reg cleaner on this pc?

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click the Infrared Devices branch to expand it, click the first infrared device listed, click Properties, and then click to select the Disable in this hardware profile check-box.
Repeat step 2 for each additional device listed under the Infrared Devices branch until all devices are disabled, and then continue to step 4.
Double-click the Network Adapters branch to expand it. If a Fast Infrared port is listed, click the Fast Infrared port, click Remove, and then click OK. This device may not be listed in some cases.
Click OK.

Might also disable com1 and com2 in the bios reinstall the modem.Might also change com port in modem setup.

I will try more things, but just to let you know; I wiped the hard drive and reformatted it, then installed Windows 95 just to see if the modem would work with it instead of Windows 98. I was able to query the modem and also was able to hear it dial out, but could never make a connection with my ISP.

I do have Windows 98 loaded again after another hard drive wipe & reformatting & will now try a whole bunch of different settings. Thanks.
