I don't know about modern modems, but when I used an external modem in early 90s, they had a lot of lights in the fron that told you the status of the modem including the protocol.

Now having a PCI modem, what can I do to see whether I have a v.90 or v.92 at the moment and any other detailed information about it? Hyperterminal won't even let me touch the modem when I'm connected to the internet.

Windows XP is the operating system. Modem is a 3Com 56K hardware modem. I don't know the modem's model # without tearing the case apart since it doesn't read out electronically.

USR modems return the product code when given ATi7 from Hyperterminal. You could check the modem log but it will give you only what it was at connection. Just click view log.

You can do this by looking in the Windows XP taskbar next to the clock. You should see the Connection Status icon (Two computer screens). Double-click on this icon.
