I just got a Dell Dimension 8400 computer. It has an Intel (R) 537EP V9X DFV PCI Modem in it. It has connection speeds from 30000bps to 36000bps. My old Dimension 4100 has a Conexant HCF V9056k RTAD Speakerphone PCI Modem. It has connection speeds average 49333bps. 1. Why is my connection speed so much slower? 2. Is the new modem a 56k Telephony Modem? 3. How can I improve the speed? Sorry I am not very computer savvy. Please Help. THanks

Please post a modem log. This modem is a V92 modem, are you making a V92 connection? Might chek with you isp to see if they have a number for V92 support.

Some info on the chipset.

537EP V9X DFV PCI
The 537EP chipsets meet Microsoft PC 2001 specifications and are TAPI compliant. They support the industry standard AT commands for data, fax, and voice
Note the DFV Data,Fax,Voice

Control Panel -> Phone & Modems -> Modems Tab
Select your modem, then click
Properties.
Diagnostics tab
you can View the log by clicking the View Log button.
Then just click edit, select all and copy and paste it in the post field.

I couldn't get it to copy and paste, so I am going to type it.

Modem log showing Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem
Note the DF not the DFV.Looks like a Data Fax modem.
These modem have about the cheapest chipset that can be made.
Intel® 537EP Chipset
The Intel® 537EP chipset family is a host-based V.92 modem solution designed for PCI applications. The 537EP chipsets utilize the host PC's CPU to perform the signal processing algorithms and functions that are traditionally done by dedicated DSP and controller hardware. This reduces the number of components and the board space required, which reduces the overall Bill of Material (BOM) compared to controller-less and the controller-based modems. The 537EP chipsets are optimized for Intel Pentium® processor-based PCs using the Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP).

What I was looking for in the log was the connection. Will look almost like this. What to see if you were Making a V92 connection. Will show V44 for compression.

I don't know much about modems or computers. I know I paid Dell more money for a 56k PCI Telephony modem, and they are saying that is what I received, even though it isn't. Do you know of anyway I can speed it up? I typed everything that was in the log. I am at my wits end with this modem and Dell.

Do you know if your ISP supports V92. For some reason the modem will not show the connection. Did this modem come in this PC from Dell? We can do it this way,go back were you put the modem command, put in +MS=V90 reconnect and see if connection is better.

This is a brand new computer from Dell. The modem was factory installed by them. It is supposed to be a 56K PCI Telephony modem. I picked that one and paid more for it because I thought it would be a better modem. They are saying the modem installed is the telephony modem and don't want to change it. I am really frustrated. I don't know what to do at this point. Any ideas?

That did not change my connection speeds.

I am going to see if I can get more info on this modem. will check out the pci\ven_8086&dev_1080&subsys_10001028
number.Dell or Intel do not give much on this modem.Do you have this modem going past a surg device? Try connecting only the modem to the phone line.Have you ever used Hyperterminal? Could try this command in hyperpterminal.
AT+FCLASS=? determines which data/fax/voice modes are supported by the modem. Also the ati0,ati1,ati2,ati3,ati4 commands will give you some info on the modem.

I have seen on the Intel site that the 537EP chipset supports PC telephony but not sure yet if this modem will.

Telephone Answering Machine (TAM)
Voice compression: ADPCM, linear and CL1
4800, 7200, 8000, 9600 and 11025 samples/sec.
Speakerphone
Caller ID
V.253 commands

You must check that your modem is actually a VOICE modem. Refer to the modem documentation and specifications to see if it says VOICE modem. If you are still in doubt you can look at the modem diagnostics query result (from the Control Panel -> Modems -> Diagnostics). If the query response for AT#CLS fails then it is not a voice modem

I just got an email today, asking for my information, stating that they are going to replace my Donny modem with a Sonny & Cher modem. I replied with the information and asked them what exactly a Sonny & Cher modem is. I will let you know what happens. Thanks so much for all your help.
