I am having problems setting the number of rings on my Sportster 56k X2 modem. It is hooked to an RS6000 MACHINE using AIX 5.2. I have tried everything. I think it has something to do with the way the dip switches are set and every time it is powered down the modem loses its settings. Hopefully there is someone out there with the same problem. Let me know.

Have you tried putting this in extra setting? 0 is zero
S0=2

S0 Auto Answer Ring Number
This register determines the number of rings the modem will count before automatically answering a call. Enter 0
(zero) if you do not want the modem to automatically answer at all. When disabled, the modem can only answer
with an ATA command.
Range: 0—255
Default: 0
Units: rings

Charles,

I tried what you suggested about setting ats0=2 and I saved it using the at&w command and i got out and tried to login to the modem and it gave me no answer. I think it has to do something with the dipswitch and how it is set. Let me know. Thanks

Charles,

I have tried 3 different modems and none of them work. I tried setting the number of rings to 5 and then I try dialing into the modem from another computer and it rings once but then says their is no connection. But I then change it back to 1 ring and it works fine. What else could it be. The modem that is currently on it is a USR 56k X2 Voice Data modem. We have a caller id hooked up to it to. Could there be a setting on the caller id. We are also looking into getting another Modem, what do you recommend for the system that is being used by us. Any help is very much appreciated.

Have you check the modem with the ati5 command? Have you tried the modem with set dip switch 8 up and see if that helps.Do you have RapidComm Voice installled? Might also need to reset the modem with the Note page 153.also note the dip switch settings.Not sure if this would help but might disable caller id on the modem.Also note dip switch 5
ON Auto Answer Suppression
OFF Modem answers on first ring, or higher if specified in NVRAM
ON Disables auto answer
