You will have alot less problems with this pc if you do a clean install of XP.How much ram do you have on this pc,also is it a name brand computer? How is your modem listed in the device manager. If your going to use this pc on the net make sure you have a good anti virus and firewall installed,if you do not you will get shut down soon.

Charles, thank you for your reply. I am not very computer literate, so does this mean taking off windows 98 and xp and re installing it again, as I have to admit i did just put xp ontop of 98 ....ooooooops!

Yes you will reformat the drive,if you need to save anything do it now.You can backup to a floppy or if you have a cdrw put it to disk. You could still have some problems but they will be easier to fix than an upgrade.
How much ram do you have? Make sure you install a firewall and anti virus software. If this version of xp has no sp1 install I would install it soon.

If you do not want to do it this way we can try to work this problem out.
Is this a name brand pc like Dell,Compaq...ect.
Might look up drivers for hardware before to see if all your hardware has XP drivers for it.

Need a good anti virus software that is free might try Avast home.
Good free firewall that I like is Sygate.

Charles,
Thank you again for your help. I think the computer definately needs extra memory and I think I am going to restore it back to windows 98 (if possible). The computer is an old one I used to use which I have given to my mum (who is even less computer literate than me!). All she wants it for is to write to her sister in London and browse the web. I own Norton antivirus which will go on the computer - if I don't decide to get a hammer to it. :-)

thank you

If she just wants a internet machine than I would put it back to 98 or better 98se.If it is an older pc it might also need a bios update to run XP and more ram. I would not try to run XP with less than 128 meg of ram.

If all ends well I would run scandisk, defrag and maybe download microsoft regclean.Make a new folder on your desktop, download to that folder and run,it will make a backup of what it removes in the same folder in case a problem was to come up,all you have to do is right click the backup and click merg.I have used it for years with no problems.
