I was given an really old tower with a pentium mmx processor. I purchased a Smart link 56k voice modem (it did not have one)and installed it.
I am trying to make it work just for mail and Messageing.
When connecting I hear a clicking in the modem and sometimes it doen't connect. If I move the mouse while trying to connect, It will not connect. If I leave it alone it logs on and the page starts to load, and if I move the mouse, is stops communicating and I loose the connection. If I just don't touch it, the page loads just fine and fast.
When the Modem connects it connects at 53k. But while connecting, the sounds from the modem are different than those from the sounds my other compuers make while connecting. While connecting it almost sounds like an airplane is doing a fly-by.
The computer is a custom made one and has windows 98 installed. It also had Office 2000 but I uninstalled it thinking it may be causing a conflict. I did not make any difference. The only programs that are installed are: outlook express 6;the one that came with the modem;the one for the serial mouse.
It runs great, even when it had Office installed.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have checked and re checked all the modem settings as far as I can see.

Might uninstall the modem and try it in other slot.Is this 98 or 98se? When you uninstall the modem also remove the com ports in the device manager.Go to the device manager, double click the computer, check IRQ of modem,is it sharing any IRQ with other device. The sound might be the
V92 connection. I would also check this pc in safe mode, check the device manager, make sure there are no ghost hardware listed. This would be more than one listing of any hardware or hardware that was removed from the pc but are still listed in the device manager. You can also check this in regedit. Just go to start, run, type in regedit click ok.Look under Local machine,Enum, pci and make sure there is no other modems listed that are not installed on this pc.

Hello
I'm using windows 98se
I tried all 4 pci slots. The same thing keeps happening.

Checking device manager in normal start up, it shows an irq for the modem as 11 and also for irq holder for pci steering.
I see many more devices in safe mode than I do in normal. I'm not shure if I shuld remove them.
Through regedit, there is one file labled as modemwave. I open that and there are two files for the smartlink modem one is listed as #2.
This is how it's shown on the modem:
FS-LEC-SMART LINK
582-1371-y01012-00
Fcc 2h9m501bi56ksp-f0
The compusa 56k pci internal data/fax moden v.90

Thanks,Al

Looks like this modem was made by LECTRON CO
2h9 would be who made the modem.i56ksp-f0 would be the model.
FCCID # 2h9 m501b i56ksp-f0
model I56KSP-F0
http://www.lectron.net/Support.htm
The driver at smartlink in newer than the one from Lectron.
Smartlink driver DriverVer=11/09/2003,3.60.03.00
Lectron driver DriverVer=08/18/2003,3.40.06.406

What com port is the modem on and is this com port listed in the device manager? Might try removing the mouse in safe mode in the device manager, reboot to windows and see if it will install to other com port.Looks like the modem and mouse are sharing the same port.Might also disable this port in the device manager or bios and reinstall the modem. These modem use a software port and it will not be listed in the device manager. In safe mode are there more than one modem listed in the device manager under modems or more than one mouse?

If you are using a serial mouse, check the com port the mouse is on and disable the other port in the bios or device manager, reinstall the modem, that would be remove the drivers from the add remove program, reboot and then install the modem drivers.

Hello:
the com port for the modem is always set at com 3.The com port, com 3, is not listed in the device manager. I removed the modem and reinstalled it. It still was com 3.The serial mouse was always on com 1. I disabled com 1, uninstalled the modem; reinstalled the modem.I even uninstalled the mouse and usd the pc with only the keyboard. Still the same.
I purchased a new ps/2 mouse. Still the same.
In safe mode there is only one mouse and only one modem listed.
I removed ,restarted, reinstalled and even did the hokey pokey. Still the same.
I used a telephone test set to listen on the line while the modem is connecting. Sounds like the modem drops out for a split second and then tries to re-establish communication with the isp.
Bad modem?
Something wrong in the config of the pc?
Strange; it runs so well otherwise.
??????????????????????????????????????????

Thanks, AL

Did you disable the com port in the device manager or bios. If the bios is set to control IRQ sterring than need to disable it in the bios. Please post a modem log.If still having problems with this modem might take it back for one with other chipset like Agere. Can you make a connection and still having the problem with the mouse.

Hello:
I purchased another modem. Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI. It's working great. Does'nt drop out like the other one.
Of course the return time period on the other one expired yesterday.
Just out of curiosity I would have liked to find out what was going on (or what was'nt) with the other one.

Thanks for the help.
Al
