Hi, I got a free oc from someone for my sister. it is running win xp. it apears to be an older pc. Has 750 mhz,20 g hd,320 Ram. Award bios v 6.00 pg
amd athalon .
All works except the modem. it has the model # 90109-2, made by smart modular technologies on it. I have tried for a week to install this to no avail. i also tried to install one of my owm, that i know for a fact works. I have followed several suggestions from many people in 2 other forums. Some say turn off "pnp os?" yes - turn to no. . Removed all remnants of modem. Removed modem from unit. Rebooted each time. Install drivers off of cd i burned. Installed them- reboot, install modem, reboot, etc- every which way - says working, says installed, etc. it will not detect the modem on it's own. i have to physically install it thru add new hard wizard. When i query i get modem failure code 10. CAnnot do hyperterm. Dials, disconnects. No dial tone. Is this a win modem? What is the proper procedure for pnp? is there any hope? i do not have a restore cd for this pc. Thank you , Any help would be appreciated. i am pulling out my hair.

You can not install this modem with add new hardware wizard.Is this the fccid# of the modem? 2D7USA-35107-M5-E
You will need pnp inabled
Lucent 1648T00 chipset
Model 90109 (Cheetah/Matterhorn), Lucent 1648T00 (Mars-3) chipset
You will need to remove all modems listed in the device manager,go to start,run and type in ltremove.exe click ok and reboot.
Run the Setup.exe, don;t let Windows automatically install the driver - cancel new hardware installation wizard when booting.
I would use the 8.30 lucent drivers.If you still have a problem try modem in other slot. This is a oem win modem.This modem is in alot of HP computers.

I so GIVE up. Read all the great things- learned alot- did all of them . Driver unzips, asks to install, says it is installing and stays on that screen forever. I am just going to buy a new modem with a cd and take it from there. Tired of playing with this thing.

On older machines, the driver install can stay on the screen for a long time (well, mainly Win98 and older than what you've got). But, from what looks like you've already done, you may have a "wacko" XP setup.
IOW - do you have many COM ports showing in use? See
www.modemsite.com/56k/xptip.asp - first item

Depending upon what other modem you get, you may or may not have problems. Ideally, you want to clean your XP install - either by just re-installing XP from scratch, or undoing the "damage" -
remove modem physically
run ltremove.exe
clean up any COM port issues;
then, re-install modem.
